Rivian has launched the public online configurator for its R2 midsize SUV, allowing customers to build their vehicle on its website.
“The R2 configurator is live. Explore paint colors, interiors, wheels and more. Head to our website and start building,” the company wrote on Friday.
The tool’s arrival comes just one day after a “Design yours” button briefly appeared on Rivian’s website before being pulled — a signal that the deployment was in its final stages.
The configurator launch caps months of back-and-forth on timing.
When Rivian debuted the R2 at SXSW on March 12, the company told reservation holders via email that they would see their “estimated time to order” in June.
In mid-April, a report indicated the configurator would open in May, after an internal version for employees had already gone live.
Rivian then walked that back last week, reaffirming June as the target. The tool ultimately went live today — ahead of the revised timeline.
What’s Configurable
Only the R2 Performance with Launch Package — priced at $57,990 — will be available to order at launch.
However, the configurator shows all three trims announced in March.
The Premium trim at $53,990 is expected in late 2026, with the Standard Long Range at $48,490 arriving in the first half of 2027 and the base variant at approximately $45,000 in late 2027.
The Performance is a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive SUV producing 656 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque, with an EPA-estimated range of up to 330 miles.
Configurable options include exterior colors — with new shades such as Catalina Cove, Esker Silver, and Half Moon Grey among the choices — interior finishes, and wheel options.
The Launch Edition is offered in six exterior colors, though Rivian has confirmed that Forest Green and Borealis will not be available from the start.
According to the website, the colors are scheduled to debut in late 2026 and 2027, respectively.
Upgrades Pricing
The configurator reveals the cost of optional upgrades for the first time.
Wheel upgrades range from $1,000 to $2,000, while paint upgrades are also priced between $1,000 and $2,000.
The Coastal Cloud interior upgrade is listed at $1,000 over the standard Black Crater Signature finish.
The list of accessories available for the R2 includes an in-house built Screen Protector for the first time, priced at $65.
The Launch Package includes access to Rivian‘s Autonomy+ hands-free driving system, a tow package rated at 4,400 pounds, and a Rivian Green anodized aluminum key fob.
After the Launch Edition, Autonomy+ will cost $49.99 per month or $2,500 as a one-time purchase.
R2 Block Party
The configurator launch coincides with the latest stops on the R2 Block Party tour.
Events in Palo Alto and Miami are running this weekend from May 15 to 17, giving prospective buyers the chance to see the vehicle in person.
Attendees at previous stops in Venice, Denver, Chicago, Long Island, and Atlanta have been able to sit inside the vehicle and view all available exterior colors, though demo drives are not offered during the tour.
Nashville is the final scheduled stop, from May 22 to 24.
Demo drives at select Rivian Spaces are expected to begin around July.
Rivian Assistant
Rivian also began rolling out its AI-powered voice assistant this week as part of software update 2026.15.
The feature — the product of a two-year internal development effort — replaces Amazon’s Alexa and will be available on R2 vehicles when customer deliveries begin.
Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid had originally promised the assistant in “early 2026,” but the feature was absent from multiple OTA updates before CEO RJ Scaringe confirmed during the latest earnings call that it would arrive “in the coming weeks.”
Production and Deliveries
Rivian began volume, saleable production of the R2 on April 22 at its Normal, Illinois, plant.
The first units have been going to employees, consistent with standard automotive practice, with external customer deliveries expected by the end of spring.
The company is preparing to add a second production shift later this year, with a third shift planned for 2027.
Rivian is targeting 20,000 to 25,000 R2 deliveries in 2026 within a total delivery target of 62,000 to 67,000 vehicles.
The company has said the R2 costs roughly half as much to build as the R1S, citing a simplified zonal electrical architecture that cut 2.3 miles of wiring harness length and reduced connectors by 60%.
The R2 SUV is being framed as central to its goal of reaching profitability, though the company has recently delayed its profitability target.
The R2 is also the foundation of a robotaxi partnership with Uber worth up to $1.25 billion, with autonomous R2-based vehicles planned for deployment in San Francisco and Miami starting in 2028.
