Rivian disclosed on Tuesday that the R2 Launch Edition will not be offered in the Borealis purple shade, the limited-edition color introduced on the R1T and R1S in December last year.
Forest Green will also “be available later,” after Rivian ramps up R2 production with a narrower initial color set.
Rivian owner and content creator Chris Hilbert (@hilbert) flagged on Tuesday that the company has reordered the palette in the mini configurator in a way that effectively separates the two groups.
The new ordering on the configurator places six colors to the left of or including Launch Green: Esker Silver, Glacier White, Midnight, Catalina Cove, Half Moon Grey, and Launch Green itself.
Forest Green and Borealis sit to the right of Launch Green, suggesting they fall outside the initial Launch Edition window.
The configurator reordering aligns with the color information Rivian published in a blog post on Tuesday detailing the Launch Package, the only configuration available when R2 customer deliveries begin in spring 2026.
Six Launch Colors, Forest Green Later
Rivian said in the blog post that R2 Performance with the Launch Package comes standard in Esker Silver, with paid options for Launch Green, Catalina Cove, Half Moon Grey, Glacier White, and Midnight.
Esker Silver is the only no-cost color on the R2, mirroring the paid-color convention Rivian applies across the R1S and R1T vehicles.
The R2 Performance with Launch Package is priced from $57,990, with customer deliveries planned to begin in June.
Employees began taking delivery of their R2 vehicles earlier this month.
Borealis Excluded From Launch Edition
The Launch Package will not include Borealis, the purple shade Rivian introduced as a limited-edition color on the R1T and R1S in December 2025.
Borealis will instead be offered on the broader R2 Performance trim that follows the Launch Edition window.
Launch Green’s Symbolic Return
Rivian is bringing back Launch Green for the R2 Launch Package after originally introducing it as a limited edition on R1 Quad-Motor variants.
“Born during early R1 development days, Launch Green was inspired by the e-coat process — the electrostatic layer every Rivian receives before its final color,” the company said in Tuesday’s blog post.
The shade was Rivian‘s “debut color and handshake with the world,” the post added.
A Rivian Green anodized aluminum key fob — described in the blog post as having “evolved from Launch Green” — is also included as part of the Launch Package, alongside Lifetime Autonomy+ access and a 4,400-pound towing package.
Three New Colors for R2
Three of the eight colors in the broader R2 palette were developed specifically for the second-generation vehicle: Catalina Cove, Esker Silver, and Half Moon Grey.
Catalina Cove is a coastal teal shade. Half Moon Grey is a neutral cool grey.
Esker Silver is the standard Performance color, paired with Compass Yellow brake calipers and exterior badging — Compass Yellow being a previously-discontinued R1 color now reused as an accent.
Borealis at Miami Art Week
Rivian introduced Borealis at Miami Art Week in December 2025, tying the launch to its Aventura and Brickell retail spaces in Florida.
The company also released a Miami Edition R1S Quad — a $134,990 limited run of 10 hand-built units finished in Glacier White with aqua and pink accents and an Ocean Coast & Driftwood interior — to mark the opening of the Brickell space.
Whether the R2 Borealis variant will follow a similar Miami-themed launch later this year has not been disclosed by Rivian.
Miami Art Week 2026 runs from November 30 to December 6.
Two Interior Choices
The R2 Launch Package introduces two new premium interiors, with Black Crater Signature available first and Coastal Cloud Signature added later.
Rivian said Black Crater Signature uses upcycled Birch wood and textile accents in a dark tonal palette inspired by volcanic rock.
Coastal Cloud Signature offers a lighter palette with cool coastal sky tones, also paired with upcycled Birch wood and soft textile accents.
Both interiors are part of Rivian‘s “nature-inspired design language,” the company said.
Visible at Palo Alto Lab
Photographs from Rivian‘s Palo Alto, California, lab on Friday — where 16 R2s were spotted parked — showed five of the six Launch Package colors on production-paint vehicles.
Three Half Moon Grey R2s, two Catalina Cove vehicles, two Glacier White units, and one Launch Green were visible alongside several camouflaged prototypes.
No Borealis or Forest Green R2s were photographed at the Palo Alto lab, consistent with the configurator-implied “available later” status of those two colors.
Lifetime Autonomy+
The Launch Package includes Lifetime Autonomy+ — Rivian‘s premium driver-assistance subscription — for the lifetime of the vehicle.
The system delivers Universal Hands-Free driving on more than 3.5 million miles of roads across the United States and Canada, the company said.
Lane Change on Command, which finds gaps in traffic and changes lanes on divided highways, is also included.
Rivian described the Launch Package on Tuesday as “your ticket to being one of the first to take delivery.”
Q1 Earnings Call
Rivian reports first quarter 2026 results on April 30 after the US market close, with founder and chief executive officer RJ Scaringe and chief financial officer Claire McDonough scheduled to take analyst questions at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
The earnings call is expected to provide the most detailed public commentary yet on R2 production cadence, customer delivery sequencing, and the Launch Package allocation among the company’s reservation holders.
