Rivian Moves a New Batch of R2 Order Windows Months Earlier

Rivian has been moving R2 order windows earlier for reservation holders in at least two waves since July, according to several reports from owners across X, the Rivian Forums, owner groups and Reddit.

The latest shift came this week, when reservation holders logged in to find their invitation windows months closer than before.

The EV maker has not publicly commented on accelerating its invitation sequence, leaving holders to reconstruct the pattern by comparing notes.

A Three Months Jump

The case that crystallized this week’s wave came from Joe Nuzzo, who reserved on March 7, 2024 — the R2’s reveal day — and whose account had shown one of the furthest windows EV documented when the estimates first appeared at the end of June: December 2026 to February 2027.

On August 4 he posted a side-by-side complaint at the company — “Make it make sense,” he wrote, noting his day-one reservation, Launch Edition interest and immediate-delivery preference trailed a reservation his wife had placed two days earlier.

Eight days later the same account showed September to October 2026. “My order window got bumped way up,” Nuzzo posted early on Tuesday, a roughly three-month advance.

Other reports followed the same shape this week.

A reservation holder wrote on Monday that a family reservation was “just moved up from Jan – Feb, to October-November” on the launch trim.

The July Wave Set the Pattern

The bumps are not new — a dedicated Rivian Forums thread from July 10 recorded the first round, with its opening post describing invite dates “shifting a few weeks to a month” as the company tweaked its sequencing.

The thread’s sharpest case belongs to a holder with a March 8, 2024 reservation whose window read December 2026 to January 2027 — until he flagged interest in a Launch Edition vehicle in early July and watched the estimate collapse to a matter of weeks, a pull-forward of at least four months.

Entering an expiring lease produced similar jumps for others, consistent with EV‘s reporting in June that lease expiry ranks among the strongest sequencing factors, while holders with neither lease nor preference changes reported smaller, unprompted advances.

Two Readings of the Same Signal

What the earlier windows represent remains unclear.

Rivian has not said whether the moves reflect cancellations among launch-trim order holders — each of which advances the queue behind them — or an increase in production, and the company discloses neither R2 output nor conversion rates.

The optimistic interpretation runs through the factory, though the timing complicates it.

Chief operating officer Javier Varela said on the July 30 earnings call that a second R2 shift arrives by the end of the third quarter, meaning the shift starts only next month at the earliest, is not running as the windows move, and contributes no material volume before the fourth quarter.

The second interpretation is less comfortable, and the evidence for it sits in EV‘s own ledger: VIN assignments have settled at roughly 500 a week, less than half the mid-July peak, Cox Automotive data imply only about 789 R2s reached buyers in the model’s first quarter on sale.

Rivian has guided to 20,000 to 25,000 R2 deliveries this year, a target the second half must carry almost alone, with no material second-shift volume expected before the fourth quarter.

The moving windows also land amid mixed signals from the company about what holders are queuing for: chief executive RJ Scaringe said three times on the same call that both remaining R2 trims would arrive in early 2027, only for Rivian to tell EV a day later that plans are unchanged — with the Premium trim still set to start deliveries this year and the Standard following in 2027.

Rivian declined to give R2 production or delivery counts for the second quarter, citing a record of more than 57,000 demo drives instead.

The next hard evidence arrives with third-quarter production and delivery figures in early October — the first print where the R2’s contribution is too large to hide inside a single total.
