Rivian has assigned nearly 6,000 vehicle identification numbers (VINs) to its R2 SUV, according to owner tracking, adding close to 950 serials in the two weeks since the count passed 5,000 in late July.
The latest reading came on Monday from an Arizona buyer posting as ‘robstilltrippin’ on the Rivian Forums order tracker: “Vin assigned 5950 / Invite to purchase 8/10/26,” the buyer wrote, noting the serial arrived almost four weeks after his order invite.

The reservation was placed on March 7, 2024 — within days of the model’s unveiling — an order invitation and order on July 14, 2026.
A Launch Green configuration on 20-inch wheels quoted a four-to-eight-week delivery window, with the VIN and purchase invitation landing 27 days after the order.
The step confirms that the ramp has settled at a rate of about 500 assignments a week — matching the slowed pace first visible in the second half of July and running at less than half the model’s peak, when the count jumped by roughly 1,300 serials in under a week to 4,100.
A VIN is assigned before production of a vehicle is complete, so the count does not equal finished cars, deliveries or registrations.
Serials are also issued by build slot and configuration, in batches, meaning the figure runs ahead of completed vehicles and short windows can mislead on the line rate.
With Rivian declining to disclose R2 production or delivery figures, the community-logged count remains the closest public read on the ramp.
Buyers first receive a “pre-production” notice, and only once a VIN is attributed can they complete the purchase and schedule delivery — a wait that for the earliest reservation holders, who signed up at the model’s March 2024 unveiling, ran more than two years.
The Ledger
VIN 5 was photographed at a Nebraska charging stop on April 4, driven cross-country from the Normal, Illinois plant toward Rivian‘s California headquarters, before volume, saleable production formally began on April 22.
Windshield numbers above 500 appeared at an April plant event with Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, VIN 904 surfaced in mid-June, and the pace stepped up once customer orders opened on June 9 with two-to-six-week delivery windows.
Assignments surpassed 1,300 within ten days of the launch, climbed toward 2,000 a week later, crossed 2,820 on July 11and reached 4,100 by July 15 in the steepest weekly increase — before the move to 5,000 took a full fortnight.
The subsequent fortnight to 5,950 repeated that slower rhythm almost exactly.
Community-tracked data continues to show Catalina Cove leading the early build mix at 38.0% of VIN-assigned orders, ahead of Half Moon Grey, Launch Green and Glacier White.

The Guidance Arithmetic
Rivian has guided to 20,000 to 25,000 R2 deliveries in 2026, of which 5,000 are planned for California.
Chief Operating Officer Javier Varela said on the July 30 earnings call that a second shift will be added by the end of the third quarter, with no material volume contribution expected until the fourth.
The company again declined to disclose R2 build or delivery counts for the second quarter, citing instead a record of more than 57,000 demo drives, while Cox Automotive figures imply about 789 R2s reached US buyers between April and June — the model’s first quarter on sale.
Founder and Chief Executive RJ Scaringe called the SUV “a driver of Rivian’s long-term growth and profitability” on the call.
The Friction Around the Ramp
The slower serial pace has coincided with a difficult stretch for the rollout.
The R2 produced five separate quality reports in its first 47 days of customer deliveries — spanning paint, exterior lighting software, the high-voltage battery, charging hardware and cabin components.
Buyers have also reported a delivery slowdown, with VINs going unmatched and unsold R2s accumulating at the factory.
Scaringe said three times on the July 30 call that both remaining R2 trims arrive in early 2027, yet Rivian told EV a day later that plans are unchanged, with Premium deliveries starting in 2026 and the Standard trim following in 2027.
In Canada and Europe, the R2 has been delayed beyond 2027, leaving the US ramp to carry the model’s first-year targets alone.
The next hard numbers arrive with third-quarter production and delivery figures in early October — the first quarterly print in which the R2’s contribution will be too large to hide inside a single total.
