Rivian Expands Extended Warranty Program to 31 States, Adds R2

Rivian has expanded its optional extended-warranty program ‘Rivian Care’ to 31 US states — up from six a month ago — marking the largest single expansion since the protection plan debuted as a Texas-only pilot in May 2025.

The update adds 25 states to the program’s footprint and, for the first time, lists the R2 mid-size SUV alongside the R1T, R1S and Rivian Pre-owned vehicles as eligible models.

Deliveries of the R2 to external customers began on June 9.

The warranty program’s expansion arrives as thousands of new owners prepare to take delivery over the coming months.

Rivian Care launched in May 2025 as a pilot restricted to a small group of Texas owners.

X user and Rivian owner Chris Hilbert, who first mentioned the expansion on Wednesday, also mentioned the program’s debut at the time.

The pilot shifted its geographic footprint multiple times over the following year. An earlier expansion late in 2025 offered coverage in Georgia, Maine, Minnesota, New York, South Carolina and Texas.

A subsequent update in early June dropped Maine, Minnesota and South Carolina while adding Colorado, Illinois and Oregon, settling the list at six states.

The latest update quintuples that count.

Rivian Care is now available in Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Maine, Minnesota and South Carolina — which were dropped from the six-state list — have also returned.

Several of Rivian‘s largest ownership markets remain absent, however.

California, the single biggest EV market in the country, is not on the list. Florida, Pennsylvania, Washington, Ohio, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Virginia are also excluded.

Rivian has said on its support page that it plans to roll out the program across the country in the future and invites owners in uncovered states to register interest through their accounts.

What the Program Covers

Rivian Care is an optional vehicle protection program administered by United Service Protection Corporation, which operates under the trade name Assurant.

Owners can choose one or both of two separate products.

The Vehicle Service Contract covers the cost to repair or replace the high-voltage battery, drivetrain, mechanical components, safety systems and more after a covered breakdown, once the Rivian New Vehicle Limited Warranty ends.

Coverage extends to motors, electronics, advanced driver-assistance and safety systems, infotainment, sensors, cameras and mechanical systems including heating, ventilation and suspension.

Select wear-and-tear items are covered from the start of the plan.

The Vehicle Service Contract acts as secondary coverage to the factory warranty, and the two may overlap, Rivian has noted.

The Preferred Vehicle Protection plan addresses everyday damage that the factory warranty does not cover, including windshield damage, tire and wheel damage and paintless dent repair.

Both plans are transferable to a new owner, possibly for a fee — a feature Rivian and Assurant have positioned as a way to support resale value.

Replacement parts used under either plan may be new, used, remanufactured or non-original-equipment, according to the contract terms.

Rivian does not publish fixed pricing for the program.

Owners receive a quote after applying, and the company states that coverage costs less when purchased while the factory warranty is still active.

Buyers preparing to take delivery of a new vehicle can add Rivian Care during the purchasing flow.

Owners who have already taken delivery can log into their Rivian account and complete an interest form.

Gap Post-Factory Coverage

Every newly produced Rivian comes with a New Vehicle Limited Warranty that runs for four years or 50,000 miles for comprehensive bumper-to-bumper coverage.

Battery and drive-system coverage extends further, to eight years and up to 150,000 miles depending on the battery pack.

Standard battery packs carry coverage to 120,000 miles, while the larger and Max packs reach 150,000 miles.

Vehicles also carry eight-year corrosion protection.

The Vehicle Service Contract is designed to take over after that comprehensive coverage expires, addressing the high-cost battery and electronics repairs that concern owners keeping their vehicles long term.

Owners outside the covered states have previously turned to nationwide third-party providers such as Xcelerate and EV-Assure, which offer extended coverage for Rivian models regardless of location.

R2 Ramp

The warranty expansion coincides with the early weeks of R2 deliveries.

On Tuesday, reservation holders began receiving their estimated times to order.

Rivian is targeting 20,000 to 25,000 R2 deliveries this year within a full-year guidance range of 62,000 to 67,000 vehicles.

Adding the R2 to the eligible model list ensures the program is available to the cohort of buyers entering Rivian‘s ecosystem at a lower price point, with the R2 Performance starting at $57,990 and a $45,000 Standard trim expected in 2027.

Rivian ended the first quarter of 2026 with 100 service centers, 39 showrooms and nearly 700 mobile service vehicles.

The company has said it aims to operate more than 150 service centers by the end of 2027 and plans to expand its mobile service fleet by 50% this year.

Founder and Chief Executive RJ Scaringe has described the R2 as the most important launch in the company’s history.
