Polestar to Launch SUV Variant of the Polestar 4 on September 2

Polestar confirmed on Tuesday a new variant of its best-selling model — the Polestar 4 SUV — with sales planned to start on September 2.

The announcement adds a second body style to the Polestar 4 lineup alongside the existing coupé, as part of what the brand has called the “largest model offensive in its history.”

Polestar described the SUV as offering greater practicality and storage versatility while retaining the design, performance and sustainability credentials of the coupé that launched in 2023 and became the company’s global best-seller.

“Polestar 4 has quickly established itself as a favourite among our customers,” CEO Michael Lohscheller stated, admitting that the brand’s “seen strong demand from drivers who want distinctive design and performance combined with great practicality.”

Polestar is “building on that success by offering even more versatility, while staying true to the Polestar 4 character.”

Specs

The Polestar 4 SUV retains the coupé’s proven 400-volt architecture across two drivetrain configurations.

Rear motor variants produce 200 kW (272 PS) and 343 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.1 seconds.

Range reaches up to 630 km (391 miles) under the WLTP cycle for the SUV, compared with 620 km (385 miles) for the coupé.

Standard equipment on the Rear motor includes 20-inch Aero wheels, a dynamic standard chassis and anodised brake calipers.

Dual motor variants deliver up to 544 hp.

Further details on trim levels, equipment and pricing are expected closer to the September sales start.

Coupé Stats

Polestar is backed by China’s Geely Holding Group, but headquartered in Sweden.

In the Scandinavian country, the Polestar 4 coupé is priced from 619,000 SEK ($64,200).

Despite the coupé’s success among Polestar‘s lineup, the brand is currently running aggressive discounts on the model across key markets.

In Germany, the Rear motor coupé is listed at €59,900 ($68,500), down from €61,900 — a €2,000 reduction labelled as a “Limited Offer” — while the Dual motor carries the same discount to €67,900.

In the Netherlands, the cuts are deeper: the Rear motor starts at €54,800 ($62,700), down €5,000 from €59,800, with the Dual motor at €58,800, a €5,000 reduction from €63,800.

In the UK — the brand’s largest European market — the Rear motor carries a £6,500 reduction to £50,250 ($67,300), down from £56,750.

The Dual motor is listed at £57,250, reduced from £63,750.

The highest cuts are in the United States, where Polestar is selling through remaining inventory ahead of a full market exit.

The Rear motor coupé is listed at $31,400, slashed $25,000 from its $56,400 sticker price — a 44% cut.

The Dual motor is priced at $37,900, down $25,000 from $62,900.

US Ban

The US Department of Commerce declined last month to grant Polestar an authorization under the Connected Vehicle Rule, which bars manufacturers owned or controlled by Chinese entities from selling connected vehicles in the country starting with the 2027 model year.

The 2026 model year is the last Polestar will sell in the United States.

The new Polestar 4 SUV, set to arrive as a 2027 model, will not be available to American buyers.

The decision came weeks after Volvo Cars, which shares Polestar’s controlling shareholder in Geely and builds vehicles at the same South Carolina plant, received its own authorization.

Polestar sold 1,895 vehicles in the US during the first half of 2026, a 42.2% decline from the same period a year earlier.

The brand has posted year-over-year sales declines every month since July 2025.

Production and Market Access

Tuesday’s press release noted that the Polestar 4 SUV “is manufactured in Busan, South Korea, and will be available to order in a majority of Polestar markets.”

The Busan facility is operated through a partnership with Renault Korea.

Polestar began producing the Polestar 4 coupé at the same plant earlier this year, with management stating at the time that South Korean output was destined for the North American market.

The Polestar 4 coupé was originally manufactured exclusively at Geely‘s Hangzhou Bay facility in China.

Whether Chinese production of the model continues alongside the Korean line — and how output from Busan will be allocated across markets now that the SUV variant has been added — remains unclear.

Tuesday’s press release did not mention the Hangzhou Bay plant.

A full shift of Polestar 4 production to South Korea would carry significant trade implications for Europe.

Chinese-made Polestar vehicles currently face an 18.8% countervailing duty imposed by the European Commission in October 2024, on top of the EU’s standard 10% vehicle import tariff — a combined 28.8% levy.

South Korea’s free trade agreement with the EU eliminated tariffs on passenger vehicles, meaning Busan-built Polestar 4s would enter the bloc duty-free.

Moving European-bound production to Korea would therefore remove a substantial cost burden that has weighed on the model’s competitiveness against rivals assembled within the EU or in countries with preferential trade access.

Polestar 3

The manufacturing split contrasts with the approach Polestar has taken for its flagship SUV.

The company confirmed in March that all global production of the Polestar 3 would be consolidated at Volvo‘s plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina, ending manufacturing of the model in Chengdu, China.

The Polestar 3, which shares a production line with the Volvo EX90, also recently received a significant update, gaining 800-volt architecture, faster DC charging at up to 350 kW, an in-house developed rear motor and a new central computer.

Refreshed versions of the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 coupé opened for orders across Europe and Canada in May.

In Canada, the Korean production line has been central to Polestar‘s strategy.

The brand shipped its first Busan-built Polestar 4 units to Canada late last year, bypassing the 100% tariff that Ottawa imposed on Chinese-made EVs in 2024.

Following a trade agreement between Canada and China that reduced tariffs on Chinese-built EVs to 6.1%, Polestar reintroduced the China-made Polestar 2 sedan in June, restoring a three-model Canadian lineup.

Polestar delivered approximately 60,119 vehicles globally in 2025, a 34% year-over-year increase, with Europe accounting for more than 75% of total volume.

The company is guiding for low double-digit volume growth in 2026, implying roughly 66,000 to 69,000 deliveries.
