XPeng said on Wednesday it delivered its first vehicle produced outside China, marking the start of local manufacturing in Indonesia, as Chinese carmakers expand their sales footprint across Southeast Asia, Europe, and Latin America.
The model delivered was the second-generation X9, a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) launched earlier this year, which also became the first vehicle manufactured at XPeng’s new assembly facility in Indonesia.
The carmaker began pre-sales for the X9 MPV and the G6 SUV in the Southeast Asian nation in March, and formally launched the X9 in the Indonesian market in late June, pricing it from IDR 990 million (approximately $60,750).
On the same day, the company announced that right-hand-drive versions of the X9 would begin local production in Jakarta in July.
The facility marks XPeng‘s first localized manufacturing site outside China and forms part of its broader global strategy to expand its footprint from 30 to 60 markets in 2025. As of mid-July, the company said it had entered 46 markets.
In Indonesia, the brand has partnered with the local distributor Eral (Erajaya Active Lifestyle) for sales and aftersales services.
“From becoming the sales champion among Chinese NEV startups in multiple markets, to surpassing 800,000 global deliveries, and now achieving localized production in Indonesia, our global strategy is advancing step by step, with unstoppable momentum,” wrote CEO He Xiaopeng on social media platform X.
Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest new energy vehicle (NEV) market, has seen a sharp increase in electric vehicle (EV) adoption.
According to the Association of Indonesia Automotive Industry, EV sales exceeded 43,000 units in 2024, up 150% from the prior year. The government aims to ramp up EV production to 400,000 units in 2025 and to 1 million by 2035.
In its home market, XPeng registered 6,700 vehicle sales in the week of July 14–20, up 15.1% from the prior week, according to weekly insurance registration data.
Earlier this month, the company launched the G7 SUV in China with a starting price of 195,800 yuan ($27,300), with deliveries beginning shortly thereafter.
Last week, XPeng raised its 2025 hiring target from 6,000 to 8,000 new employees as it moves toward a global workforce of nearly 30,000.
On Monday, the company announced that it had reached 2,000 cumulative vehicle sales in France, 13 months after entering the market.
