Chinese tech giant Xiaomi saw its sales rebound 40% sequentially last week to 7,160 vehicles as the company prepares to launch its second model, the YU7.
According to data revealed on Chinese social media, registrations stood at nearly 7,200 units between May 12 and 18 recovering from three consecutive weeks of decline.
Xiaomi ranked sixth among the best-selling new energy vehicle (NEV) brands last week.
Among NEV start-ups, it followed Li Auto, which sold 9,200 units, and Leapmotor and Aito, with 7,500 units each. Xiaomi surpassed XPeng’s sales in the second full week of May, which recorded 5,800 units during the same period.
Out of the 6,600 units sold by Nio Group, 4,200 were Nio brand EVs. The Geely-backed brand Zeekr recorded 3,600 vehicles.
Tesla x Xiaomi
Previously scheduled to be launched in “June or July,” the company’s second model and first SUV, the YU7, will be launched this Thursday, on May 22.
The SUV targets Tesla‘s refreshed Model Y, launched in China earlier this year — and the best-selling model in the country during March.
Xiaomi‘s debut SU7 became a direct competitor to the U.S. brand’s Model 3, first outperforming the sedan in sales late last year.
From May 12 to 18, 7,160 SU7s were sold in China, while the Model 3 represented 5,100 of the total 11,100 vehicles sold by Tesla in the same period. The Elon Musk-led brand’s registrations surged 258%.
On Tuesday, local media outlet Time Weekly reported that the second phase of Xiaomi‘s EV factory is expected to be completed next month, coinciding with the launch of the new model.
