Tesla US Sales Reach New 2025 Record in August, Motor Intelligence Reports

Electric vehicle maker Tesla sold 55,500 vehicles in the United States last month, a new monthly record in 2025, sales estimates from Motor Intelligence showed on Wednesday.

The figures mark a modest 4.4% rise from the same period last year and a 3.1% increase from July’s 53,816 units, when Tesla posted its first year-over-year monthly gain since the start of 2025.

In the first six months of 2025, registrations declined year over year every month.

From January 1 to August 31, and according to the Motor Intelligence estimates, the Elon Musk-led company sold 337,079 vehicles in the US, 24% below the 417,647 units registered in the first eight months of 2024.

Tesla recently launched the refreshed versions of its flagship Model S and Model X, at a starting price of $84,990 and $89,990.

In August, the company introduced a ‘Luxe Package’ on both models, raising their prices by $10,000.

The package comes standard with the luxury sedan and SUV, and features free lifetime Supercharging and free Premium Connectivity.

It also includes the Full-Self Driving (FSD) software — which is available for purchase by Tesla customers for $8,000, or as a $99 monthly subscription.

The package was later introduced in the Cybertruck’s most expensive trim — the Cyberbeast — for which the pricing was raised to $114,990. The standard version of the truck is priced from $69,990.

Tesla‘s Model 3, which was revamped in late 2023, is priced from $42,490 in the United States, and prices from the recently refreshed Model Y SUV start at $44,990.

When it comes to leasing, the monthly rate for the Model Y went up in early August to $399 (from $349), for a 36-month contract with a $3,000 down payment.

In the company’s latest earnings call in late July, CFO Vaibhav Taneja warned that the Tesla has a “limited supply of vehicles in the US this quarter.”

For customers in the US “looking to buy a car, let’s roll now as we may not be able to guarantee delivery for orders placed in the later part of August and beyond,” he added.

Late last month, it was revealed that Tesla is considering raising the price of its best-selling model, as demand surges ahead of the September 30 expiration of the federal $7,500 EV tax credit.

Several reports on the final week of August noted that that inventory for the new Model Y “is running very low” across the US.

“Trending toward a need to expedite output even further, which could mean adjusting pricing upward in the coming days. Trying hard not to, will see,” Raj Jegannathan, Tesla’s head of sales operations (promoted since Troy Jones left after 15 years in the company), wrote on X.

Last week, the company launched a new version of the SUV — the Model Y Performance. As of Wednesday, the model is only available in European markets.

It follows the release of the three-rowed Model Y L in China, which is not coming to the US until the end of next year, according to Musk. Deliveries for the six-seater began on Tuesday.

On Monday, Tesla released a new software update (2025.32.3), which improved the frontal airbag system (which now uses Tesla Vision) and the recently rolled out Low Power Mode.

The EV maker is preparing to unveil a new version of the FSD by the end of September.

Last month, Tesla‘s CEO Elon Musk also said the robotaxi service will open to the general public in Austin later this month, as the company awaits regulatory approval to operate the system in additional states.

Earlier this week, a new video showed that the company is now operating its Robotaxi service on an Austin freeway, as it continues expanding the geofenced area.

According to Motor Intelligence, Rivian sold 4,825 vehicles last month, 6% down from a year ago, while Lucid Motors registered 993 vehicles in August, 70 of which were Gravity SUVs.

Ford said it sold 190,206 vehicles in the US in August, up 3.9% increase from the 182,985 units recorded a year ago.

Sales of fully electric models increased 19.3% to 10,671 units, while hybrid vehicle sales jumped 14.5% to 18,773 units.
