Nio Exports Stay Below 100 a Month Despite Ambitious Expansion Target

Chinese EV maker Nio Inc. exported 72 vehicles in June, according to data from the country’s Passenger Car Association (CPCA) released on Wednesday.

Shipments from the group — which includes Nio, Onvo and Firefly brands — continue to decline despite the arrival in new markets.

Founder and CEO William Li said in early January that Nio aims to be present across “40 countries and regions” by year-end.

The June total was 18.2% lower than May’s 88 units and remains well below the hundreds of vehicles shipped every month in the second half of 2025.

Unlike May, however, when Firefly was responsible for two-thirds of the group’s overseas volume, June saw the balance shift back toward the main Nio marque.

The premium brand exported 36 vehicles, exactly half of the group’s total, while Firefly contributed 32 and Onvo shipped just four units.

The latest figures bring Nio Inc.‘s cumulative exports for the first half of 2026 to 475 vehicles — with the Nio brand accounting for 231 units, Firefly 221, and Onvo 23.

Nio’s Best Month Since March

The premium Nio brand posted its best export performance in three months, increasing shipments from 24 vehicles in May to 36 in June.

The ‘5566’ entry-level series remained the company’s primary export models.

The ES6 accounted for 17 vehicles, nearly half of all Nio-branded exports during the month, while the ET5 sedan followed with eight units and the ET5 Touring added seven.

Three ES8 SUVs were exported alongside the year’s first EC6 shipment, though it remains unclear whether they were a previous version of the third-generation one.

Through June, the ES6 — known in several overseas markets as the EL6 — has accounted for 93 of the brand’s 231 overseas shipments, comfortably ahead of every other model in the lineup.

No ET7 exports were recorded during the first six months of the year.

It remains unclear which model year the brand is exporting for each models.

European Case

Most of these models have been made available in Europe, however, Nio is currently not exporting 2026-27 Model Year vehicles to the continent, as the company first aims to clear inventory of 2023- 24-produced vehicles.

As exclusively reported by EV, Nio does not plan to introduce new model updates in the region until late 2027.

Additionally, several vehicles have been used by various owners through the company’s subscription model, which has reportedly affected registration data across its European markets since 2022.

The distortion may significantly understate its active user base while simultaneously masking the fact that no new vehicles have been shipped to Europe in the last few years.

New Batch Arriving

A batch of 105 vehicles built for the Norwegian market is scheduled to arrive in July, according to Nio, although the company has not confirmed whether the shipment has already reached the country.

As of press time, no official announcement has been made regarding its arrival. The timing of the shipment’s departure from China has also not been disclosed.

Additionally, Nio has not revealed the batch’s model mix.

However, the majority of the vehicles are expected to be Firefly models, given that the refreshed Nio-brand lineup has yet to reach Europe and Onvo‘s European launch is not expected until 2027.

It also remains unclear whether the 105 vehicles represent Norway’s entire July allocation or form part of a larger shipment destined for multiple European markets.

Nio has not disclosed how the vehicles will be distributed across the region, leaving open the possibility that some countries may receive only Firefly models while others are allocated Nio-branded vehicles.

Firefly

After delivering the strongest rebound of the year in May, Firefly‘s exports moderated in June.

The sub-brand shipped 32 vehicles, down from 59 a month earlier but still considerably above April’s seven-unit low.

January remains Firefly‘s strongest month of 2026 with 70 exports.

Despite the monthly decline, Firefly remains almost level with the Nio brand in cumulative overseas volume.

The sub-brand has exported 221 vehicles during the first half of the year, only ten fewer than Nio itself.

Firefly continues to serve as the group’s primary international growth brand, with expansion ongoing across Europe and Southeast Asia through local distributor partnerships.

Onvo Holds Steady

Onvo exported four vehicles in June, broadly in line with recent months.

The sub-brand has now shipped 23 vehicles overseas in 2026, with exports remaining concentrated in newer markets including Uzbekistan, Armenia and Costa Rica.

While Onvo‘s international rollout has been gradual, company executives have repeatedly indicated that overseas expansion remains secondary to building scale in China, with Europe expected to follow at a later stage.

Nio previously confirmed Onvo would be arriving to Europe in 2027.

Delivery Breakdown

The group’s export volumes remain modest compared with its overall deliveries, reflecting management’s strategy of prioritizing long-term market expansion over short-term overseas sales.

During the first six months of 2026, the company exported 475 vehicles, averaging just under 80 units per month.

The first-half figures suggest the company’s international business continues to expand gradually through distributor-led markets, with Firefly and the Nio brand now contributing almost identical volumes as the group broadens its presence outside China.

Nio‘s overall deliveries reached 40,597 vehicles in June and totaled 191,123 in the first half of the year.
