Lucid Motors‘ newly introduced ‘Halo Secure’ feature for its Gravity model has generated pushback among owners after the company said the security system will transition to a paid subscription starting in 2026.
The automaker rolled out the service this week as part of its UX 3.3 over-the-air update for the Gravity, which added a beta version of two vehicle monitoring tools: Live View and Drive Recorder.
Live View allows owners to stream real-time video of their vehicle’s surroundings via the Lucid mobile app, while Drive Recorder automatically captures and saves clips of certain events.
According to Lucid’s release notes, customers will be able to use Live View free of charge through the end of 2025, after which a subscription will be required.
Drive Recorder saves clips directly to local storage, but forum participants debated whether broader Halo Secure functionality could also fall under the paid plan.
On the Lucid Owners forum, one user noted that the brand’s website does not mention any costs related to the feature.
“Which I get, but I don’t see any reference on the Lucid website that says this is an extra feature requiring a subscription. The features of the Gravity just list “Halo Secure” as being included with “Vehicle Safety Monitoring and event recording while driver is away,” he wrote.
In one of the footnotes, Lucid clarifies that the feature “is optional and not available as standard.”
“Additionally, some entertainment or connected vehicle features require enhanced vehicle wireless connectivity and/or additional third-party subscriptions to operate,” the company clarifies.
In October 2024, the EV maker Rivian launched its streaming and connectivity service, the ‘Connect+’.
Priced in the US at $14.99 per month or $149.99 per year, it includes in-car music streaming, unlimited data and hot spot connectivy for up to eight devices, among other features.
Lucid‘s UX 3.3 update also introduced towing enhancements such as Tow Mode, integrated trailer brake control, and hitch view, along with improved key fob connectivity that requires a service center visit.
As reported earlier this Friday, the first Lucid Gravity has been listed on the second-hand market with just 200 miles on the odometer.
The model is a Gravity Dream Edition, the flagship variant of the large SUV, which was offered only to reservation holders of normal trims.
The 3.3.1 version also fixes previously flagged issues with the key fob.
Lucid currently offers the Gravity Grand Touring in the US, which starts from $94,900.
The Gravity Touring is expected to launch in its domestic market later this year.
The Touring variant starts at $81,550, including shipping, making it the cheapest version of the three-row SUV.
