Onvo L60 Won’t Offer One-Pedal Driving, Cites Safety and Regulatory Considerations

Onvo, the sub-brand of Chinese automaker Nio, clarified on Sunday it is not planning to roll out the single pedal feature for the Onvo L60 SUV. In Europe, the feature was introduced last year via an over the air update to most Nio-brand vehicles.

The company noted that “many Tesla owners switching to the Onvo L60 have inquired about the one-pedal driving mode,” but confirmed that the feature will not be offered on the model.

“During the L60’s design phase, the product team considered both driving safety and user habits. While one-pedal driving can enhance energy recovery, it also significantly changes driving habits and may increase the risk of pedal misoperation in emergencies,” Onvo stated. “Currently, the L60 does not plan to offer a one-pedal driving mode.”

Onvo also cited China’s draft standard GB21670, which requires one-pedal driving to be manually activated at each startup and prevents it from being the default setting.

“Additionally, according to GB21670 (Passenger Car Braking System Technical Requirements & Testing Methods – Draft for Comments), one-pedal mode must be manually activated every time the vehicle starts and cannot be enabled by default,” Onvo stated.

The EV maker admitted that some drivers prefer stronger regenerative braking adding that it will be paying attention to customers’ feedback.

“However, we acknowledge that some users prefer strong regenerative braking. Onvo will monitor regulatory developments and user feedback to assess whether to introduce a “Strong Regenerative Braking Off Mode” in the future,” the company stated.

Nio Offers One-Pedal Driving in Europe

While Onvo has opted against one-pedal driving, Nio’s main brand introduced the feature in Europe last August as part of Banyan OS version 2.3.5, its proprietary operating system.

The update brought over 50 improvements, including one-pedal driving for all five Nio models available in Europe, except for the recently launched Nio EL8 (known as ES8 in China).

Similar to Tesla’s implementation, Nio’s one-pedal driving mode allows drivers to decelerate and come to a stop by gradually lifting off the accelerator, using regenerative braking instead of manually applying the brakes. The feature aims to enhance driving comfort and control, particularly in stop-and-go traffic.

Onvo, the sub-brand of Chinese EV maker Nio, is preparing to launch two new models later this year.

The first model, officially confirmed as the L90 last month, was shown in new images shared on Saturday, revealing the SUV’s rear design for the first time. The L90 is expected to debut in the second quarter and go on sale in the third quarter.

The brand had previously released its first official image of the L90 on February 25, the same day Li Auto began teasing its first all-electric SUV, the Li i8. A day later, Onvo published a second image of the L90, parked next to Li Auto’s L9 model.

Despite the recent slowdown in vehicle deliveries, Nio’s founder and chief executive, William Li, reaffirmed the 20,000-unit target for March in a new interview published on Friday.
