Polestar UK Registrations Slip 2% Year-on-Year in June

Geely-backed Polestar registered 2,554 vehicles in the United Kingdom in June, according to data published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) on Monday.

The result marks a 95.7% increase from May’s 1,305 units but edges 1.6% lower year over year — compared to the 2,595 registrations recorded then.

June’s sequential surge is consistent with the quarter-end pattern that has characterized Polestar‘s UK sales in recent years.

Registration volumes in the British market typically peak in the final month of each quarter, driven by plate-change cycles and fleet delivery schedules.

In the first quarter, March accounted for 2,406 of the quarter’s 4,151 total registrations.

June repeated that dynamic, delivering more than half of the second quarter’s volume in a single month.

The United Kingdom has seemingly remained Polestar’s largest European market in June.

The brand registered 16,959 EVs in the country in 2025, doubling the prior year’s figure.

The UK was also the first market to receive the upgraded Polestar 3, which introduced an 800-volt electrical architecture, peak DC charging of up to 350 kW, and an eightfold increase in processing power.

Quarterly and First-Half Numbers

Second-quarter registrations reached 4,935 units — a 6.6% increase from the 4,628 vehicles registered in the previous year.

For the first half of 2026, Polestar registered a total of 9,086 vehicles in the UK, up 9.2% from the 8,323 units sold in the first half of 2025.

At the current run rate, the brand is tracking comfortably ahead of the pace required to match 2025’s full-year total of 16,959 registrations.

Annualized, the figure implies roughly 18,172 units — which would represent a seventh consecutive year of growth if sustained.

From January through May 2026, Polestar had posted year-over-year growth in every month except March, when registrations fell by just 28 units compared to the same month a year earlier.

The pattern repeated in June.

Polestar‘s monthly registrations in the UK depend heavily on shipping logistics from its overseas plants.

All current models are produced in either China or the United States, with the Polestar 3 SUV now exclusively manufactured at Volvo’s South Carolina facility.

Production of the Polestar 4 recently began in South Korea, though management has said the output is set to supply the North American market.

The company is guiding for low double-digit volume growth in 2026, implying roughly 66,000 to 69,000 deliveries for the full year.

UK EV Market

The broader UK new car market grew 11.4% in June to 213,166 registrations — the best performance for the month since 2019, according to the SMMT.

Battery electric vehicles (BEV) accounted for 30.0% of the total, with 63,950 units registered, a 35.0% increase year over year.

Polestar captured approximately 4.0% of the BEV segment in June.

Between January and June, BEVs held a 25.0% share of the UK market — a record level, but still short of the 33% target set under the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate.

The SMMT noted that BEVs would need to surpass 40% of registrations across the second half of the year to meet the full-year requirement.

Among other EV-focused brands in the UK, Tesla led with 12,173 registrations in June, up 58% year over year and a 315% surge from May.

The Model Y topped the SMMT’s monthly best-sellers list with 6,765 units, followed by the Model 3 at 5,408.

BYD registered 6,242 vehicles, a 36% year-over-year increase and a 21% rise from May.

XPeng posted 245 registrations, more than doubling year over year with a 115% gain, though volumes remain small in absolute terms.

Polestar‘s 2,554 registrations place the Geely-backed brand behind Tesla and BYD in the UK’s pure-EV segment but ahead of XPeng.

The UK’s broader EV expansion has been supported by more than £12 billion ($16 billion) in cumulative manufacturer discounts, according to the SMMT, alongside the impact of rising fuel costs linked to the Middle East conflict.
