Chinese giant BYD announced Wednesday it rolled off its 9 millionth new energy vehicle (NEV) from the production line. The landmark vehicle was the fully electric U9 model, a model of the automaker’s luxury sub-brand YangWang.
Last weekend, the brand unveiled its second car carrier, capable of transporting 7,000 vehicles, as sales in European markets continue to grow.
BYD needed 13 years to produce its first million NEVs, 2 years and 3 months to reach 5 million, and just 11 months to move from 5 million to 8 million units. In less than three months, it produced another million units reaching 9 million NEVs.
BYD’s Yangwang sub-brand recently shared a video of the U9, which reached a top speed of 233 mph (375 km/h) thanks to its four 240 kW electric motors delivering a total output of 960 kW (1,287 hp).

Earlier this week, the Chinese media outlet 36Kr reported that BYD plans to expand its portfolio in Japan, with the launch of its seven-seat Tang SUV.
