Rivian’s R2 order-invitation activity has reportedly increased sharply in August, with weekly mentions across social media reaching roughly 2.5 times July levels, according to data compiled by X user ‘Rivian_DD’.
The data provides another indication that Rivian is moving through its R2 reservation base at an accelerating pace as production of the electric SUV prepares to begin a second shift later this month at the company’s Normal, Illinois plant.
X user ‘Rivian_DD’ shared the analysis this week, which compiles the number of R2 order-invite mentions recorded each week across several online communities.
The dataset is based on mentions from r/RivianR2, r/Rivian, a Rivian Forums tracker and a Facebook R2 group, as stated in the original post.
The figures are not Rivian-reported order invitations and should be treated as a public, self-reported indicator of activity rather than an official company statistic.
August Activity Jumps
According to the data, R2 order-invite mentions totaled 102 across the four full weeks shown for July.
August then started at 35 mentions for the week of August 3 before increasing to 84 on August 10 and 94 on August 17.
The week of August 24 recorded 52 mentions, which puts the four full August weeks at 265 mentions, or about 2.6 times July’s 102.
The chart also showing 74 mentions for the week beginning August 31, which covered only three days, including the weekend.
R2 Invitations to Order
The increase comes as Rivian continues to work through a reservation queue that began accumulating more than two years ago, when Rivian unveiled the model in March 2024.
Rivian began sending R2 order invitations to reservation holders on June 9, the same day customer deliveries started and public test drives opened.
However, not every reservation holder receives an invitation at the same time.
Rivian said reservation timestamp and delivery location are the two primary factors determining when customers receive an invitation.
Current and former R1 owners are also receiving accelerated delivery timing, while Rivian has said the treatment is balanced with deliveries to non-owners.
Once an invitation is received, the customer can finalize the configuration and place an order.
The two-to-six-week delivery window begins after the order is confirmed, rather than when the invitation is received.
The first R2 available to order is the Performance with Launch Package, which started at $57,990.
Reservation holders who prefer to wait for another configuration, color or future technology can retain their place in line rather than immediately placing an order.
The distinction is important when looking at the latest data.
An order invitation is not necessarily equivalent to a confirmed order, and a confirmed order does not immediately translate into a delivery.
Conversion Higher Than Expected
The increase in invitation activity comes after Rivian’s founder and CEO RJ Scaringe said the company has been encouraged by the rate at which R2 reservation holders are converting into orders.
Scaringe told analysts on July 30 that the reservation-to-order conversion rate for the Launch Edition was “meaningfully higher” than Rivian had expected.
The comment was notable as the first R2 available to customers is also the most expensive version of the vehicle.
The company has not disclosed the number of R2 reservations or an actual conversion percentage.
Scaringe also said production, rather than demand, was currently the more significant constraint.
Rivian started R2 production on a single shift and has been preparing to add a second shift at Normal by the end of this month.
The company expects the second shift to begin toward the end of the third quarter, although Chief Operations Officer Javier Varela admitted that it is not expected to contribute material additional volume until the fourth quarter.
R2 VIN Attribution
The invitation data also comes as publicly reported R2 vehicle identification numbers approach 10,000.
The serial count is not a direct production tally.
Rivian assigns VINs in batches based on build slots and vehicle configurations, meaning serial numbers can run ahead of completed vehicles and customer deliveries.
Nevertheless, the numbers provide one of the few publicly available indicators of the production ramp, since Rivian has not disclosed detailed R2 production figures.
Rivian has guided to 20,000 to 25,000 R2 deliveries in 2026, including 5,000 vehicles planned for California.
The company’s full-year delivery guidance for the entire lineup currently stands at 65,000 to 70,000 vehicles.
August US Sales
The stronger invitation activity also comes against a mixed sales backdrop.
Rivian sold an estimated 4,537 vehicles in the US in August, according to Motor Intelligence data, down 6% from a year earlier — when the EV tax was still applied — and 3.5% from July.
July had been Rivian’s strongest month of 2026, with an estimated 4,700 US retail sales.
Despite the August decline, every month since the R2 reached customers has produced more than 4,000 US retail sales, a level Rivian had crossed only twice during the first five months of the year.
