Tesla Secures Lowest Tariff Rate of 9% After EU Revises Duties on China-made EVs

After being allowed to provide evidence for a revised duty rate before the final decision takes place in November, the European Commission said on Tuesday that Tesla will pay the lowest rate of 9% on imported GigaShanghai-made vehicles.

Over the last few months, the Commission has provisionally concluded that the battery electric vehicles (BEVs) value chain in China benefits from unfair subsidization, threatening European competitors.

With other Chinese EV manufacturers facing tariffs that go up to 36.3%, the company led by Elon Musk has proved to the European Commission that Beijing provided fewer subsidies to non-Chinese brands.

China has recently opposed the EU’s measures, naming them protectionist while threatening retaliation across several industries.

Following the revised measures, BYD will pay a tariff of 17 percent while Geely also saw a slight adjustment of their tariff from 20% to 19.3%.

Seventeen other companies that cooperated with the EU’s investigation will now face a slightly increased tariff of 21.3%, up from 20.8%, following the commission’s finding of errors in its initial calculations.
