Tesla has received only 600 vehicle orders in India since it launched in the country in mid-July, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
According to the report, the US brand is planning to ship between 350 to 500 vehicles to India until the end of the year, with the first batch arriving in the country this month.
The same sources said that the size of the shipment is based not on the orders it received, but on the full payments for the vehicles ordered.
Bloomberg also reported earlier this year that the first Tesla models to arrive in the country are Model Y SUVs shipped from the Shanghai Gigafactory. The company manufactures the model both in China and the US.
Despite lower tariffs on automakers producing in India, the US brand does not intend to manufacture vehicles in the country, as confirmed earlier this year by India’s Minister of Heavy Industry.
Model Y deliveries in the country will be limited to Mumbai, Delhi, Pune and Gurugram, according to the Tuesday report.
Tesla officially arrived in India in mid-July, as it opened its first showroom in the Bandra Kurla Complex business centre, in Mumbai.
A few weeks later, the US brand also opened a second location in India. The store is located in the IGI Airport, the main international airport in the country’s capital, New Dheli.
According to the EV maker’s Indian website, orders for the Model Y can be placed with a starting price of ₹61,07,190, equivalent to about $71,200.
On Tuesday, Reuters also reported that an Indian tax panel is considering higher consumer taxes on luxury electric vehicles (EVs) costing more than $46,000 — which would apply to Tesla.
This proposal comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi pushes to reform India’s tax system and promote domestic consumption, as US tariffs are beginning to take effect.
India currently imposes a duty of 110% on imported vehicles that cost more than $40,000 — which has led Tesla to hold back on plans to enter the country before.
In Mumbai, the vehicle has a “on-road” pricing of ₹61,07,190 ($71,200), while in Gurugram, the pricing goes up to ₹66,76,831 ($77,800).
According to Tesla‘s website, the Full Self-Driving (FSD) can be purchased for ₹6,00,000 ($7,000). However, the availability of the system is not yet confirmed for India.
Despite the low EV adoption rate in India, the EV market share nearly doubled from a year ago.
The only other international new energy vehicle (NEV) brand present in India is BYD — which registered 459 passenger vehicles in July 2025, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).
Data from August has not yet been published.
