Rivian’s R2 VIN Count Passes 12,100 as Quarter-End Delivery Report Nears

Rivian has assigned more than 12,000 vehicle identification numbers to its R2 SUV, according to ‘Rivian Roamer’, the owner-run tracker that aggregates order and delivery data from R2 buyers who link their vehicles, with the highest serial seen now at 12,1XX and that car already booked for delivery.

The reading, taken on Sunday, comes from 1,124 linked R2s, up from 788 when the count passed 11,400 on September 11. The climb of roughly 700 serials in nine days is slower than the 2,000 added in the 13 days before that, when the count ran from about 9,400 on August 29 to 11,400.

The highest VIN is a Launch Green Performance with the Coastal Cloud interior and 20-inch all-terrain wheels. Roamer hides the last two digits and notes that its highest VIN is only the highest linked to the site, not Rivian’s production total.

VINs Are Not Deliveries

A VIN is assigned in batches by build slot and configuration before a vehicle is complete, so the serial count runs ahead of finished cars and further ahead of customer handovers.

Roamer’s own sample shows the gap. Of the 1,124 linked cars, 554 have been delivered, 147 have a delivery booked, 55 are ready for delivery and 368 are on order.

The site now reports that R2 vehicles take a median of 19 days from ready to pickup, on 111 orders with a date and 30 waiting, which Roamer says is 12 days faster than the four weeks before.

Rivian’s Upcoming Report

Rivian typically publishes quarterly production and delivery figures in the first few days of the month after the quarter closes, which puts the third-quarter release in early October.

However, the upcoming report will not settle how many R2s have been delivered.

Rivian reports a single company-wide delivery figure each quarter, which it labels global although it sells only in the United States and Canada, and the number combines the R1S, R1T and R2 with the Commercial Van in its 500 and 700 forms.

The company has never disclosed model-level production or deliveries, so no official count of passenger vehicles exists, let alone of the R2 alone.

The closest external reading remains Cox Automotive’s, which implied about 789 R2s reached American buyers through June, the model’s first three weeks on sale.

Since then the R2 has ranked fourth among electric models in Colorado registrations for August, while Motor Intelligence estimated Rivian’s US sales slipped 6% in the same month.

Rivian has guided to 20,000 to 25,000 R2 deliveries this year inside a company total raised to 65,000 to 70,000 after the second quarter. It delivered 42,247 vehicles in 2025.

Second Shift Due Within Days

Founder and Chief Executive Officer RJ Scaringe said on the July 30 call that the R2 line in Normal, Illinois started on a single shift and that Rivian expected to add a second by the end of the third quarter, which ends on September 30.

Chief Operating Officer Javier Varela said the second shift would not contribute material volume until the fourth quarter.

Chip Newcom, Rivian’s VP of Investor Relations, reaffirmed the timing at Goldman Sachs’s Communacopia conference on September 8.

Scaringe told Morgan Stanley’s Laguna conference on Tuesday that the ramp is gated by tier-two and tier-three suppliersrather than by the plant, and that reservation holders are still converting to the Launch Edition above plan.

What Buyers Are Choosing

Every linked R2 is the Performance with Launch Package, the only configuration on sale, from $57,990 or about $59,485 with destination. The Premium at $53,990 is due late this year and the Standard Long Range at $48,490 in the first half of 2027.

Within that single trim, Roamer’s sample shows Catalina Cove on 34% of cars and Launch Green on 23%, followed by Esker Silver and Glacier White at 10% each, Half Moon Grey at 9%, Forest Green at 6%, Borealis at 4% and Midnight at 2%.

The 21-inch Liquid Tungsten all-season wheel edges the 20-inch Black Sand all-terrain, 52% to 48%, and the Black Crater interior outnumbers Coastal Cloud three to one. The single most common build, Catalina Cove on 21-inch wheels with Black Crater, is 15% of the sample.

Borealis, the last of the eight announced colours, opened to early reservation holders on Tuesday, a week after Forest Green and Coastal Cloud reached all buyers.
