Rivian has assigned more than 11,400 vehicle identification numbers (VINs) to its R2 SUV, according to Rivian Roamer, an owner-run tracking site that aggregates order and delivery data from R2 buyers who link their vehicles.
The site’s highest VIN seen stood at 11,4XX on Friday morning from a total of 788 linked R2s.
A separate post on September 4 from X user ‘NC_JD’ corroborated the upward move, with the user writing in a reply that he got a “notification of VIN 107xx today to be delivered before end of month.”
The 11,400 figure extends a climb from VIN 9,400 on August 29.
VINs Are Not Deliveries
A VIN is assigned in batches by build slot and configuration before a vehicle is complete, meaning the serial count runs ahead of finished cars and further ahead of customer handovers.
Rivian assigns numbers based on production scheduling rather than reservation order, so a single high reading does not mark where the sequence has reached at any given moment.
A VIN in the 11,000 range does not mean 11,000 R2s have been produced or delivered.
Roamer’s own sample shows the gap.
Of the 788 R2s linked to the site, 420 have been delivered, 92 have a delivery booked, 59 are ready for delivery and 217 are on order.
The site notes that Rivian has built more R2s than it tracks and that recent weeks lag because a car is counted only once its owner links it.
At the 7,200 mark in late August, the Normal line was producing about 600 units a week on a single shift while serials were being issued at close to three times that rate.
Rivian has not disclosed model-level production or delivery figures for the R2.
Cox Automotive data implied approximately 789 R2 units reached US buyers by the end of June, the model’s first month on sale.
Community-tracked data remains one of the few external windows into the ramp, since Rivian reports only a single company-wide delivery figure each quarter.
Build to Driveway in a Month
Roamer also measures the interval from Rivian’s build stamp to delivery.
For the week to September 7 the median was 31 days, down from a peak of about 42 days in mid-August, with the middle half of cars falling between roughly 22 and 45 days.
The figure covers the 390 delivered R2s with known dates in weeks with at least five deliveries and includes the time owners took to book their handover, so it measures the whole pipeline rather than Rivian’s logistics alone.
The site’s running total of booked deliveries, cars with a confirmed date, reached 484 against 420 delivered, a forward pipeline of 64 in the sample.
The VIN Trajectory
The R2 VIN count has followed a pattern of sharp bursts and slower stretches since customer deliveries began on June 9.
Assignments surpassed 1,300 within ten days of orders opening, climbed toward 2,000 a week later and crossed 2,820 on July 11.
A mid-July burst carried the count from about 2,820 to 4,100 in less than a week — the steepest weekly increase at the time — before the pace slowed sharply as it passed 5,000 at the end of July.
Serials then settled near 500 a week as the count approached 6,000 in mid-August, before another fast stretch added more than 1,200 in four days to pass 7,200.
By August 24, the count had crossed 8,300, and by August 29 it had approached 10,000.
Passing 11,000 now puts the R2’s total serial count above the threshold at which the daily assignment rate, if sustained, begins to cover the lower end of Rivian‘s annual R2 delivery guidance.
Second Shift and Guidance
Founder and Chief Executive Officer RJ Scaringe said on the July 30 earnings call that the R2 had started on a single shift and that Rivian expected to add a second by the end of the third quarter.
Chief Operating Officer Javier Varela added that the second shift was not expected to contribute material volume until the fourth quarter.
Chip Newcom, Rivian’s VP of Investor Relations, reaffirmed that timeline at Goldman Sachs’s Communacopia conference on September 8, telling attendees Rivian is still planning to add a second shift in the third quarter.
Newcom also said each new color and trim option introduced on the R2 has brought increased interest from reservation holders, citing the Coastal Cloud interior as one example.
Separately, Baird analyst Ben Kallo reiterated an Outperform rating and $23 price target on Thursday after visiting a Rivian showroom and meeting Newcom, writing that the company’s positive outlook was unchanged.
Rivian has guided to 20,000 to 25,000 R2 deliveries in 2026, of which 5,000 are planned for California, inside a full-year delivery figure raised to 65,000 to 70,000 vehicles across the lineup.
Demand Signals
The VIN milestone arrives alongside several demand indicators pointing in the same direction.
R2 order-invitation mentions across social media surged approximately 2.5 times in August compared with July, according to data compiled by X user ‘Rivian_DD’.
Weekly mentions rose from a combined 102 across four weeks in July to 265 in August — a 2.6x increase.
The figures are based on self-reported posts from r/RivianR2, r/Rivian, a Rivian Forums tracker and a Facebook R2 group, and are not official company data.
Scaringe told analysts on the July 30 call that the reservation-to-order conversion rate for the Launch Edition was meaningfully higher than Rivian had expected, and described production rather than demand as the more significant constraint.
Rivian opened Forest Green and Coastal Cloud to all R2 buyers on Wednesday after an initial early-access period for select reservation holders.
CEO Scaringe also posted the first footage of an R2 in Borealis rolling off the production line on the same day, signaling the deep purple color’s September launch window remains on track.
Borealis is the last of eight announced R2 exterior colors still to open for ordering.
R2 Lineup
Only the R2 Performance with Launch Package — priced from $57,990 — can currently be ordered.
The Premium at $53,990 is due to begin deliveries later this year.
The Standard Long Range at $48,490 is scheduled for the first half of 2027, per Rivian’s July guidance.
