Rivian US Sales Drop 6% to 4,825 EVs in August, Motor Intelligence Says

According to sales estimates released by Motor Intelligence on Wednesday, Rivian has sold 4,825 vehicles in the United States last month.

The August total represents a 6% decline compared to the same period a year ago, when the Irvine-based EV maker had registered 5,133 vehicles.

Sequentially, the company’s sales in its domestic country increased by 14.8% from July’s 4,200 units, marking the second consecutive month of growth.

The EV maker expects annual delivery figures to range between 40,000 and 46,000 vehicles — less vehicles than it delivered in 2024 and 2023.

Rivian delivered 10,661 electric vehicles in the second quarter across its two markets (the US and Canada), a drop of 22.7% year over year.

The brand estimates to deliver between 20,699 and 26,699 in the second half of the year.

Motor Intelligence estimates pointed out to a total of 21,224 units sold in the first six months of the year and a total of 31,182 vehicles if considering July and August.

As it reported its second quarter financial results, the company said it expects the third quarter to be the strongest of the year.

“We anticipate the third quarter to be our peak delivery quarter of the year across both our consumer and commercial vehicles,” the brand stated on a shareholder letter, which was then reaffirmed by CEO RJ Scaringe on the earnings call that followed the report.

The brand increased on Wednesday leasing prices for several trims of its 2026 R1 models, as demand for electric vehicles continues to grow before the end of the $7,500 tax credit on September 30.

The credit is available for leasing contracts on any of the brand’s models, but most R1 model full purchases do not qualify for the tax as the final vehicle price typically exceeds the $80,000 limit.

The 2026 R1S Dual-Motor Standard variant is priced at $76,990, while the 2026 R1T pickup begins at $70,990, with a destination charge of up to $1,895 per vehicle.

Rivian‘s founder and CEO RJ Scaringe will participate on Morgan Stanley’s 13th Annual Laguna Conference on September 11, where he expected to provide updates on the upcoming R2 model.

In mid-August, Scaringe said that while the R2 and R3 models are still to be launched, the company is already developing follow-on vehicles.

According to Motor Intelligence, Tesla sold 55,500 vehicles last month, a new record year to date, while Lucid Motors registered 993 vehicles in August — from which 70 were Gravity SUVs.

Ford, which reports official numbers by the end of the month, sold 190,206 vehicles in the US in August, up 3.9% increase from the 182,985 units recorded a year ago.

Sales of fully electric models increased 19.3% to 10,671 units, while hybrid vehicle sales jumped 14.5% to 18,773 units.
