Nio Reaches 800,000 Vehicles Produced

Chinese EV maker Nio announced on Thursday that its 800,000th vehicle rolled off the production line in its Hefei plant.

The 800,000th unit produced was an Onvo L90. The model was unveiled earlier this month and will be officially launched on July 31, with deliveries starting in August.

Pre-orders for the Nio sub-brand’s second model began on July 10, at a starting price of 279,900 yuan (equivalent to $39,000).

The Shanghai-based company produced the last 100,000 vehicles less than three months after the founder and CEO William Li announced the 700,000th vehicle delivered on May 10.

“While 700,000 may not be a massive number, it reflects the upward momentum of China’s automotive technology and branding,” Li stated back then.

Previously, Nio took seven months to complete 600,000 vehicles manufactured.

The first 100,000 units were reached in April 2021, nearly three years after the company started production in its Hefei factory, with its first mass-produced ES8 SUV.

Nio will launch the revamped version of the ES8, which was recently revealed in a MIIT regulatory filing, later this year.

The company has anticipated its annual event, the ‘Nio Day, and will unveil the model at the event.

When Nio reached 100,000 vehicles produced, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk congratulated the Chinese automaker on X, saying “That is a tough milestone.”

The US brand delivered its 100,000th vehicle in late 2015 when it was selling the Roadster and the Model S. However, it produced 100,000 Model 3s in just over a year from its launch.

Nio currently has two factories in Hefei and is set to open the third one, also in the city of Anhui province.

William Li stated in the latest earnings call in June that the third site is expected to start production in September. The chief executive reaffirmed the timeline earlier this month.

Besides the launch of the Onvo L90 and the upcoming ES8, Nio is gradually updating its product lineup to reflect higher competition in the market.

In April, it started domestic deliveries of its flagship executive sedan, the ET9.

In May, it also began deliveries of refreshed 2025 versions of its ET5 sedan, ET5 Touring, ES6, and EC6 models.

Nio also announced on Thursday that it has achieved full-county level battery swap coverage in Hainan, with 41 battery swap stations across 23 counties in the province.

The EV maker currently operates 3,415 battery swap stations and over 26,800 charging piles across China.
