Electric vehicle manufacturer Nio signed a cooperation on Sunday with the State Grid of Suzhou Power Supply Company to jointly build a charging and battery swapping network.

Both parties will collaborate comprehensively in multiple areas, including jointly building charging and swapping stations, as well as engaging in vehicle-grid interactive intelligent microgrid projects in the virtual power plant.

The city of Suzhou is located west of Shanghai and is home to approximately 11 million residents. As of today, Nio has over 2,399 stations in China which have provided over 41.6 million battery swaps over the last 6 years.

In the energy sector, a virtual power plant (VPP) concept is utilized, linking numerous decentralized energy resources like solar panels, wind turbines, battery storage systems, and electric vehicles. These resources are managed via a centralized software platform, enabling them to function collectively akin to a single power plant.

The core objective of a VPP is to enhance grid stability, reliability, and efficiency by optimizing electricity generation, distribution, and consumption in real-time. Through the aggregation of diverse energy sources, VPPs offer a range of grid services, including peak shaving, load balancing, frequency regulation, and demand response.

Last week, the company unveiled a partnership agreement with Jiyue to integrate their charging networks. Through this collaboration, Jiyue, a brand jointly established by Geely Group and Baidu, will gradually become part of Nio’s expansive open charging station network across China.

Following its initial announcement in January 2021 and several delays since then, Nio has commenced last Wednesday large-scale production of the 150-kWh semi-solid-state battery.

The ultra-long-range battery was initially unveiled at Nio‘s annual event, Nio Day, where the sedan ET7, the first model from the second platform, was introduced. Now, three years later, customers in China will finally have access to them.

Nio delivered 11,866 vehicles in March 2024, marking a 14.3% increase compared to the previous year. The deliveries comprised 6,737 SUVs and 5,129 sedans.
