Nio CEO Likens Firefly Brand Appeal to Apple’s iPhone in Bid for Broader Reach

Chinese EV maker Nio Inc. is positioning its Firefly brand as more than just an entry-level vehicle line — with the group’s founder and CEO William Li comparing the brand’s cultural appeal to Apple’s iPhone.

The remarks were made during a virtual interview conducted over the weekend as part of the 18th Xuanyuan Automotive Blue Book Forum in Guangzhou.

Li said Firefly was designed around the idea of “glowing with its own light,” targeting a broad demographic that cuts across both age groups and income levels.

“A young graduate can afford it, but a wealthy executive can also drive it to take their children to school,” Li said, according to local media reports.

The comments highlight Nio‘s strategy as competition intensifies in China’s EV market, where automakers are increasingly attempting to differentiate through branding and lifestyle positioning rather than car features and specs alone.

Firefly as a Fashion-Oriented Brand

Nio, like several Chinese EV startups, has increasingly leaned on sub-brands to broaden its market reach amid an ongoing price war and slowing growth in the domestic EV sector.

Last week, Leapmotor confirmed that it will also launch a sub-brand with the first model to be unveiled before the year end.

Firefly appears positioned as the company’s attempt to capture style-conscious urban buyers seeking premium small EVs without entering the luxury price bracket traditionally associated with the Nio brand.

Li noted that Firefly has evolved beyond being simply a transportation product, describing it as a lifestyle and fashion-oriented brand with its own emerging culture — a comparison he likened to the evolution of the iPhone.

Last month, Nio‘s Senior VP of Design Kris Tomasson travelled to Milan to unveil a one-off Firefly customisation concept at Milan Design Week.

The installation marked the Chinese EV maker’s debut at one of the world’s most prominent design events.

The Milan event came weeks after Firefly launched a refreshed version of its debut model in China on April 7.

The model first launched with a starting price of 119,800 yuan ($17,600) in China — an entry-level value that was maintained as the company launched the second generation of the model last month.

Under Nio‘s Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) rental model, prices drop to 79,800 yuan ($11,700), with a monthly battery fee of 399 yuan (around $60).

The refreshed model — debuted on April 7 — added new colour options, expanded driver-assistance features, and a free over-the-air motor power upgrade that will be pushed to all existing owners in mid-May.

The headline feature was, however, a software-only motor power upgrade to 120 kW — available at no cost to every Firefly owner, with no hardware changes required.

Last week, Firefly began rolling out version 1.5.0 of its Aster OS in China, which includes software required to use the company’s upcoming fifth-generation battery-swap stations.

Future Models

The executive also confirmed that Firefly currently has no plans to launch a second vehicle model.

According to Li, the brand already commands roughly 70% of China’s premium compact EV segment, reducing the need for further expansion under the Firefly nameplate.

Instead, Nio plans to focus future vehicle development under its core Nio brand and its mass-market sub-brand Onvo.

Last month, the company’s CEO identified the Nio ES9 and the Onvo L80 as the company’s top priorities for the second quarter during an internal meeting.

The two models follow the EV maker’s focus on the third-generation ES8 and the Onvo L90 during the final months of 2025.

The Onvo L80 officially launched on May 15 — coinciding with the brand’s anniversary and World Family Day. Deliveries began a day later.

The SUV starts at 242,800 yuan ($35,650) with an 85-kWh battery pack, or 156,800 yuan under Nio’s BaaS.

Higher trims add LiDAR sensors and Nio’s in-house 5 nm Shenji NX9031 smart-driving chip.

The EV maker’s broader second-quarter product offensive also includes refreshed versions of the Onvo L60 and L90.

The updated L60 is scheduled to enter pre-sales later this month ahead of a June launch, adding a LiDAR-equipped variant as well.

Meanwhile, the 2026 Onvo L90 launched in April and began deliveries on May 9 — with more than 70 hardware and software upgrades, including Nio’s latest NWM smart-driving system and AI-native operating system.

Nio’s flagship ES9 SUV is expected to begin customer deliveries in late May.

Positioned above the ES8 and aimed at executive and business users, the model incorporates technologies first introduced on the ET9 sedan — including steer-by-wire, rear-wheel steering and the company’s SkyRide active suspension system.
