PepsiCo and its Frito-Lay division are planning to install a new eight-stall Tesla Semi charging station at their production facility in Bakersfield, California, according to local permitting documents.
The project, disclosed in a permit filed Wednesday, includes the “installation of (8) EV Tesla Semi Chargers and associated electrical equipment,” according to a filing first reported by X user ‘MarcoRPi1.’
PepsiCo was the first company to take delivery of Tesla’s fully electric Semi trucks, receiving 18 units in early 2023, followed by three more in August that year. In May 2024, the company said it had expanded its fleet further.
“In the next several months, 50 Tesla Semi trucks will operate out of its manufacturing and distribution facility in Fresno, CA,” PepsiCo said at the time.
In the same statement, the company disclosed that it had installed eight 750-kilowatt Tesla chargers and two Tesla Megapack battery storage systems at the Fresno site to support the electric truck fleet.
Speaking to CNN in January, PepsiCo said the Semi trucks can travel up to 500 miles on a single charge in a single day. “Between two drivers, one truck, and 24 hours, we were able to run 1,076 miles on a single electric truck,” the company said.
The food and beverage group is aiming to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040 as part of its sustainability strategy, known as pep+ (PepsiCo Positive).
The Elon Musk-led company is currently building Semi’s factory in Nevada with production start plannedd for later this year.
In February, WattEV announced an agreement with Tesla to take delivery of 40 Semi heavy-duty electric trucks in 2026.
Separately, Barclays on Friday cut its price target on Tesla to $275 from $325, citing a “confusing set-up” in the first quarter and “weak fundamentals.” Tesla shares closed at $241 on Thursday, implying about 14% upside based on the revised target. The carmaker is scheduled to report first-quarter earnings next week.
Tesla delivered 336,700 vehicles in the first quarter, down 12.9% from the same period last year. Production also declined 16% to just over 360,000 units, as the EV maker transitioned to manufacturing an updated version of its Model Y.
