Rivian has recently expanded its optional extended-warranty program to 48 US states, up from 31 at the beginning of July.
Washington became the most recent addition on July 25, as first noticed by Rivian owner and X user Chris Hilbert.
“Rivian has officially added Washington to the states where they offer Rivian Care,” Hilbert wrote.
Hilbert was also among the first to document the program’s earlier expansions, including its debut as a Texas-only pilot in May 2025 and the jump from six to 31 states on July 1.
The pace of growth has accelerated sharply.
Rivian Care launched in a single state in May 2025, shuffled through a handful of markets over the following year, and then quintupled its footprint to 31 states at the start of this month.
Less than four weeks later, coverage has jumped by 54.8% to 48 states. California and Massachusetts remain outside the program as of Tuesday.
California
Rivian‘s own website now allegedly confirms a timeline for the country’s largest EV market.
A Reddit user identified as ‘Makayez’, an R1T owner based in California, shared the message after logging into their Rivian account to check availability.
A page visible to account holders on Tuesday reads: “Rivian Care has officially expanded and is now available in 48 states! We are also thrilled to bring Rivian Care to California this October.”
The same page adds that the company does not have immediate plans to launch in Massachusetts but will update its community as coverage expands.
California’s absence has been a conspicuous gap since the program’s early days.
Rivian registered 3,970 EVs in the state during the first half of 2026, according to the California New Car Dealers Association.
Regulatory and licensing requirements specific to vehicle service contracts in California likely contributed to the delay, given the program is administered by United Service Protection Corporation under the trade name Assurant and must comply with each state’s insurance framework individually.
What Rivian Care Covers
Rivian Care is an optional vehicle protection program powered by Assurant, available for R1T, R1S, R2 and Rivian Pre-owned vehicles in eligible states.
Owners can choose one or both of two products.
The Vehicle Service Contract covers the cost to repair or replace the high-voltage battery, drivetrain, mechanical components and safety systems after a covered breakdown, once the factory New Vehicle Limited Warranty ends.
Coverage also extends to select wear-and-tear items from the start of the plan.
The contract acts as secondary coverage to the factory warranty, and the two may overlap.
The Preferred Vehicle Protection plan addresses everyday damage the factory warranty does not cover, including windshield damage, tire and wheel damage and paintless dent repair.
Rivian does not publish fixed pricing for the warranty.
Owners receive a quote after applying, and the company states that coverage costs less when purchased while the factory warranty remains active.
Buyers preparing to take delivery of a new vehicle can add Rivian Care during the purchasing flow, while existing owners can log into their accounts and complete an interest form.
Replacement parts used under either plan may be new, used, remanufactured or non-original-equipment, according to the contract terms.
Near-National Coverage
Rivian Care debuted as a limited pilot restricted to a small group of Texas owners in May 2025.
An earlier expansion late that year offered coverage in Georgia, Maine, Minnesota, New York, South Carolina and Texas.
A subsequent reshuffling in early June dropped several states while adding others, settling the list at six.
The early July expansion added 25 states in a single update and, for the first time, listed the R2 mid-size SUV alongside the R1T, R1S and Rivian Pre-owned vehicles as eligible models.
Several large ownership markets that were absent from the 31-state list — including Florida, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio and New Jersey — have since been added.
Washington’s inclusion on July 25 brought the total to 48.
Timing Alongside R2 Ramp
The warranty expansion coincides with the early weeks of R2 deliveries, which began on June 9 with the $57,990 Performance trim.
Rivian is targeting 20,000 to 25,000 R2 deliveries this year within a recently increased full-year guidance of between 65,000 and 70,000 vehicles across its lineup.
Adding the R2 to the eligible model list ensures the program is available to the cohort of buyers entering Rivian‘s ecosystem at a lower price point.
A $45,000 Standard trim is expected in 2027.
Extended-warranty coverage arrives as the R2 ramp navigates early quality reports.
The model has produced five separate quality issues in 47 days of external deliveries, spanning paint, exterior lighting software, high-voltage battery communications hardware, charging equipment and cabin components.
None has triggered a safety recall, and two of the reported faults were software-related and addressed or acknowledged through over-the-air updates.
A protection program that covers post-warranty repairs on the battery, drivetrain, electronics and mechanical systems may carry additional weight for buyers watching those reports.
Factory Warranty Baseline
Every new Rivian carries a New Vehicle Limited Warranty covering four years or 50,000 miles of comprehensive bumper-to-bumper protection.
Battery and drive-system coverage extends to eight years and up to 150,000 miles depending on the pack size.
The Vehicle Service Contract is designed to take over after that comprehensive coverage expires, addressing the high-cost battery and electronics repairs that concern owners planning to keep their vehicles long term.
Rivian reports second-quarter results on Thursday (July 30) after market close, with a webcast scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET.
