Rivian Faces Fifth R2 Quality Issue 47 Days Into External Deliveries

Rivian‘s R2 has produced five separate quality reports in the 47 days since customer deliveries began, spanning paint, exterior lighting software, the high-voltage battery, charging hardware and cabin components.

Each reached the public through owners, reviewers or forum posts.

The most recent arrived on Sunday, when a buyer who collected his vehicle at the Normal, Illinois, plant described three faults found on the drive home, on a car Rivian had deliberately kept back until pre-delivery inspection was finished.

The account was posted to r/RivianR2, the model’s main Reddit forum, and had drawn close to 500 upvotes and more than 270 comments as of publication.

Neither that vehicle’s VIN nor its build date has been disclosed, and no other owner has reported the same combination of faults.

What the Owner Reported

The post carries a 28-second video the owner said documents the faults, with the footage opening on a close-up of a speaker grille and surrounding trim.

The buyer said the Blind Spot View cameras stutter and cut out, and that leaving the view open for more than about five seconds produces a message saying the cameras have stopped working.

Both a soft and a hard reboot failed to clear the fault.

The same cameras function normally on the main display, an inconsistency that points toward the software rendering that view rather than the sensors themselves.

He also said the microphone sounds distorted to people he calls, which he verified with a test call to himself after several recipients raised it, while adding that he could not tell whether the cause is the microphone or audio processing.

The third fault is the only unambiguous hardware failure in the set.

The force-cancelling dual subwoofer in the trunk is blown, he said, and he pulled interior panels at a charging stop to disconnect it as a temporary measure rather than listen to it for the rest of the drive.

Here’s the video shared by the owner on Reddit.

He described the journey home from Normal as a road trip of about 14 hours.

The PDI Question

The owner said Rivian held back scheduling his delivery until the vehicle was marked “Fully PDI Complete,” and that he had read the delay as a sign of extra caution.

Pre-delivery inspection is the last checkpoint before a customer takes the keys, and a car collected at the plant never leaves the site between inspection and handover.

The owner questioned in his post how the faults were missed at that stage.

Asked in the comments why the problems were not addressed on the spot, he said the service centre and the plant are closed on Saturdays, with only delivery operating, leaving him to start the drive home with the faults unresolved.

Factory pickup, which EV first reported returning at Normal last month, places collection at the same site as production and service.

The programme has become a source of disclosure the company does not control, having also produced the assembly-line photographs behind the first sighting of non-Performance R2 units in build at Normal.

The gap the owner describes is a scheduling one rather than a distance one.

What Else Has Surfaced

The post is the latest in a run of R2 quality reports that have reached the public through owners rather than the company.

EV reported last week that a buyer had a delivery cancelled over a wrong-colour front bumper, with a Half Moon Grey car fitted with a fascia in El Cap Granite, a colour offered on the R1 and not on the R2.

RivianTrackr reported on July 21 that Rivian had halted Half Moon Grey deliveries outright, putting roughly 800 vehicles in scope and tracing the fault to plastic panels painted off-line and matched to the wrong bodies.

Earlier this month, owners on the same subreddit described the matrix LED adaptive high beams as effectively inoperative, a complaint Rivian acknowledged and then corrected in software release 2026.24.

Separately, owners on Rivian Forums reported on Friday that a faulty communications module on the high-voltage battery had flagged a number of R2s and was holding up handovers.

One buyer holding a VIN in the 2100s said a delivery appointment was cancelled, rescheduled and cancelled again before he was told the part required replacement and that the work meant dropping the battery pack.

A second owner in the same VIN range asked which cars were affected, and no list has been produced.

The description sits awkwardly against what two Rivian executives told Munro Live days earlier, when they said nothing inside the cell volume requires service and that everything serviceable had been placed in a separate housing accessible from under the rear seat.

How many vehicles are involved is unknown, and no service bulletin or affected VIN range has been published.

None of the reports has produced a safety recall.

Rivian has filed no NHTSA campaign covering the R2, and its two recalls this year — the rear toe link joint affecting 19,641 vehicles and the second-row seat belt retractor bolts — cover R1 models only, with the toe link campaign tracing to a service procedure rather than to manufacturing.

Delivery timing has been under separate strain, with buyers told earlier this month that transportation issues had pushed some handovers into August.

What the Post Does Not Establish

One car does not describe a production problem.

The three faults share no plausible common cause, which argues against a batch defect and toward an inspection escape on an individual vehicle.

Two of the three are not clearly hardware at all, despite the post’s framing.

Only the blown subwoofer requires a physical repair, and a speaker that has failed cannot be recovered by any software change.

The camera behaviour carries the opposite signature as the same cameras render correctly on the main display, the fault survived both a soft and a hard reboot, and the failure is confined to one view rather than to the sensors feeding it.

A fault of that shape would be addressable in a future software release rather than at a service centre, and precedent exists on this model.

The adaptive high beam complaint followed the same path, surfacing on the same subreddit, drawing an acknowledgement, and closing with a correction in release 2026.24 this month.

Rivian shipped the R2 with a deliberately reduced software set, Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid saying the company “intentionally decided to release fewer features [at launch] to have the best quality,” with the remainder returning through monthly updates over the summer.

The company has not said whether the Blind Spot View behaviour is a known issue or whether a fix is queued, so any expectation of an over-the-air remedy rests on the fault’s characteristics and that precedent rather than on a commitment.

The microphone sits between the two, and the owner declined to attribute it, noting he could not tell whether the cause was the component or the audio processing applied to it.

The Most Important Model

Rivian ranked highest in Consumer Reports’ most recent customer satisfaction survey while ranking lowest in predicted reliability, a combination almost no other brand posts, driven by problems owners reported on its early vehicles.

Growth is the entire purpose of the R2, a vehicle priced from roughly $45,000 to $58,000 and aimed at buyers cross-shopping mainstream nameplates rather than backing a startup.

Perception pressure is already running this week, after an independent side-by-side test found the R2 Performance consuming between 18.4% and 26.5% more energy than the Model Y Performance at every speed measured, against a parity claim the company had promoted.

Rivian reports second-quarter results on Thursday, July 30, after market close, with a webcast at 5:00 p.m. ET.

Analysts are expected to focus on the second-half ramp, where the bulk of the company’s 20,000-to-25,000-unit R2 delivery target sits.
