In an interview with Bitauto, Alan Ai, President of Nio’s sub-brand Onvo, outlined ambitious goals for the brand’s first model, the L60. Forty eight hours before the launch event, Alan clarified that Onvo aims to deliver a vehicle that “remains relevant for the next five years.”

“No family wants to buy a car that becomes outdated the next year,” Ai said, underscoring the brand’s commitment to future-proofing its vehicles.

“This industry has had more than a decade of history since Tesla started it, and the ultimate product form is almost here. Take the 900V platform as an example,” the executive remarked before detailing the development from the 400V to the 900V high-voltage architecture.

Higher battery voltage provides more energy and greater charging power, along with increased efficiency, improved performance, and weight savings for EV components like motors and inverters.

“From 400V to 800V and now to 900 volts— if it goes any higher, the current won’t be sufficient. So, for quite some time in the future, 900V will be the ultimate product form. In other aspects, the Onvo L60 should also remain relevant for the next five years,” Alan Ai stated.

Earlier this month, during the second quarter earnings conference call, Nio Group CEO William Li said the company is targeting 10,000 L60 units delivered in December and a continued increase to 20,000 units monthly deliveries “sometime next year”.

Scheduled for 7:30 pm Beijing Time, the launch of the first model under Nio’s sub-brand Onvo will take place this Thursday September 19.

The first units of the L60, a mid-size SUV with a pre-sale price 219,900 yuan ($31,000), will start in late September across China.

Alan Ai stated in an interview last week that the battery of the L60 is designed to support over 10,000 swaps over its lifetime.
