Onvo Chief Claims EV Batteries Last 100 Years with Battery Swap Technology

Alan Ai, Nio’s VP and Head of the sub-brand Onvo, stated in an interview posted on Chinese social media that the battery in Onvo’s first model, the L60, is designed to support over 10,000 swaps over its lifetime.

Since most users drive less than 900 km per week, two battery swaps per week are sufficient, giving the battery a theoretical lifespan of 100 years.

FinDreams, the battery arm of China’s largest EV maker BYD, will supply 60 kWh batteries while the larger packs will be provided by the battery maker China Aviation Lithium Battery (CALB).

As of Tuesday, the EV maker has 2,510 battery swap stations in China and has provided over 52.6 million battery swaps since May 2018.

“Battery swapping is considered safer because it adheres to a safety standard of 10,000 cycles, which exceeds typical safety requirements. Old batteries are returned to the battery storage facility, where they are replaced with new batteries,” Onvo‘s chief Alan AI stated.

“Our battery swapping is considered safer because we follow a standard of 10,000 swaps. Based on swapping twice a week, you can swap up to 100 times, which greatly exceeds the safety standard,” the executive added after explaining the battery swap process.

With the upcoming launch of the L60, an SUV designed to compete with the world’s best-selling car, the Tesla Model Y, Nio is set to enter a new price segment under its first sub-brand, Onvo.

With a pre-sale price of 219,900 yuan ($31,000), all eyes are now on the launch event, where the final price will be revealed.

As exclusively reported by EV in early August, the event is scheduled for September 19, a date confirmed by Li last week.

Onvo’s President, Alan Ai, said in late May that the brand is developing six-seat and seven-seat models aimed at larger families.
