Nio Co-Founder Lihong Qin confirmed on Thursday during a media roundtable at the Beijing Auto Show that the upcoming launch of the first sub-brand, Onvo, will be in mid-May.

As reported by the auto blogger 42号车库 on Weibo, Nio is planning the launch event of its first sub-brand three weeks from today which will include the reveal of the first model, Onvo L60.

According to Nio founder and chief executive William Li, the first product will be launched in the third quarter and mass deliveries beginning in the last quarter of the year.

The first model of Onvo, known as “Ledao” in Chinese, is a SUV that competes directly with Tesla Model Y and has been seen several times in road tests in China over the last weeks.

As EV recently reported, Nio has applied for 14 trademark registrations for its first sub-brand Onvo — known as “Ledao” in China. The trademarks are now pending approval and Nio filed for “Onvo CareTech,” “L10” to “L90,” but also “L66,” “L77,” “L88,” and “L99”.

Built on Nio’s NT3.0 platform, Onvo’s upcoming models will not use LiDAR technology, instead adopting 4D imaging radar and single motors.

This strategic decision aims to curtail expenses, enabling the brand to position these models at a more accessible price point, anticipated to range between 200,000 yuan ($27,640) and 300,000 yuan.

Earlier today, Lotus and Nio announced the cooperation in charging and battery swapping technologies. As of today, Nio has over 2,400 battery swap stations and 21,000 chargers across China.

The announcement comes after Clive Chapman, the son of Lotus founder, visited the Nio booth earlier this week, where he explored the fourth-generation battery swap station.
