Polestar Joins Singapore Police Fleet, Replacing BMW and Volvo ICE Vehicles

Singapore’s Traffic Police will add 19 Polestar 2 sedans to its fleet in the second half of 2025, marking the country’s first deployment of fully electric vehicles (EVs) for police operations, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) announced.

The new vehicles will replace some of the Volvo S80 and BMW 325d combustion engine models currently in use, as part of the country’s efforts to reduce emissions while increasing performance with faster vehicles.

The Polestar 2 sedans, the brand’s first fully electric model, will assist in patrolling expressways, responding to accidents, and enforcing traffic regulations. The move aligns with a global trend among police and emergency service departments adopting EVs from brands including Polestar, Tesla, Rivian, Chevrolet, and Ford.

The public tender, awarded in late 2023, is valued at around S$3.8 million (US$2.9 million) and includes a 10-year maintenance package.

The patrol cars have been customised for operational needs, including partitioned rear cabins for detainees, run-flat tyres with an 80km range after a puncture, and advanced communications and surveillance systems.

Features include automatic number plate recognition, in-vehicle live-streaming cameras, and rooftop message boards for real-time alerts to motorists. The SPF said deployment will begin once all equipment is installed and officers receive training, local media reported.

Singapore plans to end new registrations of internal combustion engine vehicles by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

EVs accounted for 33.6% of all new car registrations in 2024, with BYD overtaking Toyota and its premium brand Lexus to become the top-selling marque. BYD, including models from its luxury arm Denza, registered 6,191 vehicles last year, representing 14.4% of new registrations, according to the Land Transport Authority.

Polestar global sales surged 76% year over year in the first quarter of 2025 to “an estimated 12,304” vehicles.
