China and the European Union will accelerate talks based on facts and rules to address the EU’s decision to impose significant tariffs on Chinese-made battery electric vehicles.
As communicated by China’s Ministry of Commerce on Thursday, the talks aim to reach a mutually acceptable solution as soon as possible.
With the EU’s final ruling on increasing duties on Chinese electric cars still four months away (November), there remains an opportunity for both parties to collaborate towards a beneficial resolution.
The ministry’s spokesperson, He Yadong, highlighted that since June 22, multiple rounds of technical consultations have taken place between China and the European Union, as reported by ChinaDaily media outlet.
The European Commission confirmed on Thursday that provisional tariffs of up to 37.6 percent will be imposed on Chinese-made EVs starting today, July 5.
These tariffs will remain effective until a final decision is made in November. In case they are confirmed in four months, they should be definitive for five years.
On Wednesday, Germany’s auto association VDA has strongly urged the European Commission to reconsider its planned tariffs.
In a statement, the association argued that the tariffs would adversely affect both European and U.S. carmakers exporting from China.
VDA warned of potential retaliatory measures by China, which could significantly impact the German automotive industry due to its substantial export volume to China.
