XPeng Sells 6 Vehicles in UK in May as Initial Launch Slows

Chinese carmaker XPeng registered six vehicles in the UK in May, according to data released on Thursday by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The Guangzhou-based company entered the UK market in February and has sold a total of 51 vehicles in its first three months. Monthly sales reached 36 units in March and declined to 9 in April.

XPeng launched in the UK with its first-generation G6 SUV, with additional models expected to follow later this year.

The brand’s first right-hand model is available in two variants: starting at £39,990 ($53,200) for the Standard Range variant and £44,990 ($59,800) for the Long Range variant.

XPeng registered 106 units in the Swedish market last month, surpassing 100 monthly units for the first time this year.

Sales soared 338.9% to 316 vehicles in the Norwegian market while, in the Netherlands, 114 units were recorded last month (a 103.6% surge).

In Germany, however, sales dropped 10.1% month over month. XPeng, which entered Europe’s largest car market exatly a year ago, sold 186 vehicles in May.

The figures follow a record high of 207 vehicles registered in April by the Guangzhou-based brand. In May, registrations fell 10.1%.

XPeng delivered 33,525 vehicles in May, up 230% from a year earlier. As of the last day of May, the automaker had reached 42.8% of its annual target of 380,000 units delivered globally.

XPeng aims to double its presence to 60 markets by year-end. Last week, the brand announced expansion to Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia, less than two weeks after confirming the entry into Italy, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

UK Vehicle Sales

The share of electric vehicles in the British market increased 25.8% year over year — in May, over 32,738 of the total 150,070 vehicles sold were fully electric, a 21.8% share.

Hybrid models, including plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), represented 25.5% of the market with 38,249 units.

Volkswagen maintained its lead in the UK, delivering 13,562 vehicles last month.

However, the best-selling model in the market was the hybrid Ford Puma, which had over 3,500 units registered.

Considering new energy vehicle (NEV) brands, BYD‘s sales surged 407.6% year over year to 3,025 units, while Tesla’s registrations plunged 36.0% to 2,016 units, following a broad decline seen across Europe.

Geely-backed Polestar sold 1,174 vehicles in May, a 273.9% surge from the previous year.
