Jaguar Launches £130,000 Type 01 EV With 400-Mile Range

Jaguar‘s Type 01 will sell for £130,000 ($172,500), reach 62 mph in 3.2 seconds and travel up to 400 miles on a charge, The Telegraph reported on Tuesday, in an article published before the EV’s scheduled unveiling in New York.

The £130,000 price sits between the two figures Jaguar’s management had previously indicated, an entry point of about £120,000 ($159,300) and a range centred on about £140,000 ($185,800).

The Telegraph did not say whether £130,000 ($172,500) is a starting price or which version it applies to.

The 400-mile range in the report is lower than the target Jaguar had given for the US test cycle, which was up to 430 miles, and well below its European-cycle target of up to 770 km, or 478 miles.

The report does not say which test standard the 400-mile figure refers to.

The 0 to 62 mph time of 3.2 seconds is the first precise acceleration figure attached to the car.

Jaguar had already said the Type 01 uses three electric motors producing more than 1,000 PS and more than 1,300 Nm of torque, with a 120 kWh battery on an 850-volt system.

The car is described as “Jaguar’s most powerful road car”, according to the report. It has 23-inch wheels and a retractable wing.

The British newspaper described the four-door grand tourer as launched and carried what it said was an official product description, along with two images of the car and statements from JLR’s Chief Executive Officer and the UK Business Secretary.

Jaguar was due to reveal the Type 01 at 8 p.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, an hour after the report was published.

Colours Without Pink

The product description quoted by The Telegraph lists five standard colours, which it gives as “visionary silver, dramatic white, iconic black, compelling blue and refined grey”.

Two satin finishes, “modernist blue and mesmerising copper”, are also offered. Pink is not on the list.

The Type 00 concept that previewed the car in December 2024 was shown in a bright pink, alongside a blue version, and became the focus of criticism of the brand’s relaunch.

US President Donald Trump later called the rebrand a “total disaster”.

What the Images Show

The two images published with the report show the car in a pale metallic blue, shot in a studio against a dark grey backdrop.

In profile the Type 01 has the cab-rearward proportions of the Type 00 concept, with a long bonnet, a generous dash-to-axle distance and a short front overhang.

The glasshouse is shallow and set well back, under a fastback roofline that runs in one unbroken sweep to a short, cut-off tail.

A high, level shoulder line and almost flat body sides give the car a slab-sided, monolithic look, with the surfacing interrupted mainly by pronounced rear haunches.

The upright nose carries a blanked-off, body-coloured panel filled with fine horizontal ribs, the “strikethrough” graphic Jaguar introduced on the concept in place of a grille.

Slim horizontal lamps sit either side of that panel at bonnet height, and a darker lower intake with vertical slats houses a second pair of thin light blades.

The strikethrough motif is repeated as a band of ribs across the scuttle at the base of the windscreen.

A charging flap is set into the front wing, and a bronze-coloured insert sits low on the front door behind the wheel arch, in the position where the concept wore a brass-finished detail.

The door handles are flush and the door mirrors are conventional housings, where a concept would typically use cameras.

The wheels fill the arches and pair a dark, finned inner section with bright-edged spokes around a round centre cap, and a bright blade runs along the sill.

A raised element sits on the trailing edge of the roof, although the image does not show whether it is the retractable wing the newspaper described.

The plan view shows a dark panoramic glass roof over most of the cabin and no rear screen, with the area behind it finished as a body-coloured panel.

Those features match an image that circulated on Monday, about a day before the planned reveal.

From Concept to Production

The most obvious change from the Type 00 is the door count, with the two-door coupé and its butterfly doors giving way to four conventionally hinged doors.

That change had been known since Jaguar confirmed the Type 01 as a four-door grand tourer and ran camouflaged prototypes in Monaco in May.

The absence of a rear window was also known, after Jaguar showed the cabin in August with a camera-fed rear-view display in place of a mirror.

What the camouflage had hidden was the surfacing and the graphics, and the images show both carried over from the concept with little dilution.

The proportions, the strikethrough panels front and top, the split-level lighting and the bronze detailing all survive.

The production car adds the hardware a road car needs, including door mirrors, door handles, a charging flap and visible shut lines.

Built in Solihull

The car was designed in Britain, will be built in Solihull and will go on sale next year, the company said, according to the report.

“The unveiling of Type 01 marks the beginning of an exciting new era for Jaguar,” JLR Chief Executive Officer PB Balaji said in a statement carried by the newspaper.

“Designed, engineered and built in the UK, Jaguar is a copy of nothing and is a vital part of JLR’s growth story,” he said.

UK Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds called the car “a crucial step in JLR’s plans to invest over £15bn ($19.9 billion) in the UK”.

The model “will support thousands of jobs across the West Midlands and North West”, Reynolds said, according to the report.

Jaguar had earlier indicated that orders would open before the end of 2026, with customer deliveries in summer 2027.

The Launch

The Type 01 is the first production car of Jaguar’s relaunch as an electric-only luxury brand, which began with a new logo and identity in November 2024.

Jaguar confirmed the car’s name in May and showed its interior in August.

It prepared a two-day launch in New York, where a city film permit listed a shoot under the car’s internal codename.

A Jaguar store is due to open in London’s Knightsbridge on Wednesday.
