Rivian has brought back its Forest Edge interior for the second-generation R1S and R1T, offering the green cabin as a limited-time package available only on the Dual Motor Max Pack.
The return was announced on Thursday, with the company describing a scheme built around “calm green, warm wood” tones and “subtle metallic accents.”
The interior color is available with select exterior and wheel pairings for a “limited time,” with no production cap specified.
Forest Edge first appeared on the Gen 1 R1T and R1S in 2021. Rivian later dropped it, citing limited demand and a push to streamline production.
The reintroduction is the first time the interior has been offered on the Gen 2 platform.
The R1S SUV with the Forest Edge package starts at $92,990, while the R1T starts at $88,990. Both represent a $9,000 increase over the standard Dual Motor Max Pack.
Package Contents
The package pairs the Forest Edge interior with Brown Ash wood, the Darkout Package, 22-inch Sport Dark wheels and the Sound + Vision Package.
Buyers can combine it with three exterior finishes: Glacier White, Forest Green and Half Moon Grey.
The bundled options carry roughly $7,000 in standalone value.
The 22-inch Sport Dark wheels and Darkout Package together account for $2,000, the Sound + Vision Package $2,500, and the interior itself about $2,000.
Paint pricing varies. Forest Green and Half Moon Grey are each $2,500 options, while Glacier White costs $1,950.
‘Sneaker Drop’ Strategy
Speaking to The Drive, in an article published a few hours before the announcement, Rivian‘s Chief Design Officer Jeff Hammoud said the company is studying ways to offer niche finishes to smaller groups of buyers temporarily.
“We see them as like cool sneaker drops, where we could do these other editions that come out,” Hammoud told the outlet.
He cited the 10-unit Miami Edition R1S from last fall as an example of building bold designs in low numbers.
Hammoud said mainstream demand pushes design toward neutral choices, but that bolder options serve a passionate minority. “
Our Compass Yellow is one of our lowest take-rate colors when we had it, but the people who have it absolutely love it,” the design head stated, according to The Drive.
Compass Yellow, the shade carried by Rivian‘s brand logo, was permanently discontinued in 2023 amid low demand.
The green interior is the latest in a series of limited-run releases built around specific colors and trims for the R1.
Rivian used the same approach in December with Borealis Purple, which buyers could order for only a few weeks before it left the configurator.
Borealis was later carried over to the R2, confirming a path for limited R1 colors to migrate to the newer model.
Hammoud said the company plans to keep cycling colors through a small number of configurator slots across the R1 and R2 lines while retaining core finishes such as black, grey, white and silver.
Color Lineup
The interior arrives during a period of frequent color changes for the R1.
Rivian added Half Moon Grey in April, replacing El Cap Granite, describing it as warmer with a finer metallic flake.
The grey joined LA Silver and Esker Silver among the company’s grey-toned options.
In January, the EV maker introduced Rivian Green in a collaboration with Pantone, evolving its original Launch Green, which traces back to the E-coat primer applied to every chassis during manufacturing.
Launch Green remains exclusive to Quad-Motor variants.
The company also reduced its palette for the 2026 model year, discontinuing Limestone and Red Canyon — then reintroducing the red tone to the R1 lineup this year.
Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe told Access the company favors a design language “that’s more calming or more approachable,” describing colors that feel “timeless” and “not trying too hard.”
He contrasted that with rivals such as Tesla, which favors bolder, cool-toned palettes.
Timing
The launch comes hours after US regulators opened a fresh safety investigation.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reopened a probe into rear toe-link failures covering about 115,000 R1S and R1T vehicles, reviving an inquiry into a component that can separate while the vehicle is moving.
Earlier this week, Rivian also extended incentives on the R1T and R1S through June 4, pushing its discount package further ahead of R2 customer deliveries.
The Forest Edge release lands as Rivian prepares for the commercial launch of the R2, the midsize SUV central to its volume ambitions.
The company said Wednesday it will begin sending order invitations to R2 reservation holders on June 9.
The first variant available is the R2 Performance with the Launch Package, which debuted at $57,990 and includes Rivian‘s Autonomy+ driver-assistance suite as standard.
A $53,990 Premium trim is expected in late 2026 and a $45,000 Standard variant in late 2027.
Rivian is guiding for deliveries of between 62,000 and 67,000 vehicles this year, with the R2 representing around 20,000 to 25,000 of the units.
The company delivered 10,365 vehicles in the first quarter.
Cox Automotive’s estimates published last month showed that the R1S accounted for the majority of Rivian sales in the first quarter — at 53.0% — while the R1T pickup stayed at just 16.0%.
Its electric delivery van, co-developed with Amazon, is estimated to have represented 31.0% of the company’s total deliveries last quarter.
