Rivian has added Half Moon Grey to its R1 lineup, replacing El Cap Granite as the grey option for the R1S SUV and R1T pickup.
The color was first introduced last month with the launch of the R2. Internal deliveries of the midsize SUV are planned to begin later this month.
“Half Moon Grey is the newest color in our lineup, carrying a similar depth to El Cap Granite that it replaces,” the company wrote in a new blog post.
Compared to the El Gap Granite, the new color is described as “less blue” and introduces “more warmth and a finer metallic that is a more natural expression of grey.”
Rivian said it is more “subtle in tone and designed to shift with its surroundings.”
“The metallic flakes in Half Moon Grey are significantly finer than those in El Cap, creating a surface that both sparkles and glows,” they added.
Half Moon Grey joins LA Silver and Esker Silver as the grey-toned options across Rivian‘s lineup.
LA Silver remains the standard color for the R1, while Esker Silver is offered on the R2 SUV.
R1 Colors
Rivian currently offers LA Silver, Glacier White and Forest Green as standard options on the R1S across all variants.
The Dual Standard version — which is set to end production soon, as the R2 launches — is only available in these three colors.
The entry-level R1T pickup is only available to order in LA Silver, according to the configurator.
Buyers opting for the Dual trim or higher on either R1 model can also choose from Midnight, Rivian Blue, Red Canyon and, as of Tuesday, Half Moon Grey.
Storm Blue was added with the second generation but is limited to the Tri- and Quad-Motor trims.
R2 Options
The exterior colors for the R2 leaked less than 48 hours before the model’s official launch.
The list included Catalina Cove, Esker Silver, Half Moon Grey, Borealis, Midnight, Forest Green, Launch Green and Glacier White — all of which Rivian confirmed on March 12 at the SXSW Festival in Austin.
Rivian unveiled the full R2 lineup and pricing at that event.
The R2 Performance Launch Edition, priced at $57,990, is the first variant to reach customers, with deliveries to Rivian employees starting this month and external handovers scheduled for late spring.
A more affordable R2 Premium, priced at $53,990, is expected to follow in late 2026.
The entry-level R2 Standard, at $45,000, is not expected until late 2027 and will use a smaller battery pack delivering approximately 265 miles of range.
Glacier White, Midnight and the two green shades were already familiar from the R1 lineup.
The inclusion of Borealis confirmed that the color has been carried over to the R2 after being introduced as a limited-edition option for the R1T and R1S late last year.
According to Rivian‘s website, the R2 Standard will only offer Glacier White, Esker Silver, Half Moon Grey, Midnight and Forest Green.
Catalina Cove will be introduced with the Premium trim later this year.
Borealis and Rivian Green will be available from launch on the R2 Performance.
Rivian Colors
Rivian introduced itself to the world with the R1S and R1T models, available from the start to configure in a wide range of colors besides its Launch Green.
The original palette included Rivian Blue, Glacier White, El Cap Granite, Red Canyon, Limestone, Midnight, Forest Green, and LA Silver (which later became the standard color).
Last January, Rivian‘s founder and CEO RJ Scaringe told Access that the company chose a design language “that’s more calming or more approachable.”
“I think culturally and from a societal point of view, a lot of people are drawn to that. Something that feels timeless, it’s not too aggressive, it’s not trying too hard,” he stated.
Earlier this year, the company announced that the Launch Green has evolved to become ‘Rivian Green,’ in a partnership with Pantone.
The color has been used as a starting point for how Rivian shows up in “spaces, events, partnerships, and everywhere else.”
Limited Editions
Rivian has released several limited editions centered around specific colors for the R1 models.
It started with the ‘California Dune,’ a sand-painted edition of both its R1S and R1T Tri-motor vehicles.
The company didn’t reveal the production numbers for each model; however, the price remained the same as the standard colored Tri-Motor options.
Then, late last year, Rivian released a purple exterior color called Borealis.
The color was based on Alaska’s Northern Lights, also referred to as ‘Aurora Borealis,’ and is available for a limited time for both the R1S and R1T models.
As of Tuesday, the color option had been removed from the R1 configurator.
Additionally, the company has introduced a limited 10-unit run of the ‘Miami Edition,’ its first location-based limited edition, featuring white paint with bluish accents.
Other Colors
Compass Yellow, which Rivian‘s brand logo bears, used to be offered for configuration. It was permanently discontinued in 2023 amid low demand.
Rivian reduced its color palette when introducing 2026 model year vehicles last year, discontinuing Limestone and Red Canyon.
Internal sources told Riviantrackr that Red Canyon would be returning this year, without specifying whether it will be available to R1 models or in the new R2 — or to both models.
The color has been reintroduced, but only in the R1 lineup, as shown on the company’s website.
Delivery Guidance
Rivian reported earlier this month that it delivered 10,365 vehicles and produced 10,236 units at its Normal plant during the first quarter.
By then, the company reaffirmed its full-year 2026 delivery guidance of 62,000 to 67,000 vehicles.
The guidance was first issued in mid-February with the company’s fourth-quarter 2025 earnings.
It implies an increase of 46.8% to 58.6% over the 42,247 vehicles Rivian delivered last year, with meeting the target hinging almost entirely on the successful R2 ramp.
Management has said it expects R1 and commercial van volumes to remain roughly flat compared with 2025, leaving the R2 responsible for approximately 20,000 to 25,000 units from a standing start.
Chief Financial Officer Claire McDonough has cautioned that meaningful R2 volume should not be expected until the second half of the year, with production beginning on one shift before a second is added later in 2026.
Scaringe told CNBC in February that the R2 is expected to become the “majority” of Rivian‘s volume by the end of 2027.
