Rivian Plays Down R2 Forest Green Delays or Issues as 86% of Orders Await VINs

Rivian has told a prominent R2 tracker that there is “nothing to report” on its Forest Green paint, as owner-reported data show the color accounting for a third of all tracked R2 orders still waiting for a vehicle identification number (VIN).

On the Rivian Forums, a dedicated “Forest Green Issues/Delays Discussion Thread” opened on October 6, when its author counted seven weeks without VINs for many buyers, and has run to 13 pages, with members trading order dates, scattered VIN sightings and accounts of contacting customer support.

X user ‘RivianTrackr’ wrote on X that “multiple people” had contacted him about “longer than expected wait times on R2 in Forest Green,” and that he asked Rivian about “any delays or issues.”

“The official statement from Rivian is that there’s nothing to report on R2 in Forest Green. This is what Rivian emailed me back,” he wrote, without publishing the email.

What the Tracker Shows

Of 278 Forest Green R2s linked to the owner-run tracker Roamer, 239, or 86%, were still waiting for a VIN on Wednesday, 22 had one and 17 had been delivered, a delivery rate of 6.1%.

That compares with 64.8% delivered for Catalina Cove, the most popular color with 770 tracked orders, and 64.1% for Launch Green, with 548.

Forest Green makes up 11% of the 2,516 R2s on Roamer but 33% of the 725 orders still waiting for a VIN, and the tracker lists its median wait from configuring an order to receiving a VIN as “43+ days,” where the plus sign means the figure “isn’t settled yet, so it’s at least that long.”

That is the longest of the eight colors alongside Esker Silver’s 43 days, against a median of 34 days across all tracked orders.

The gap also shows against Borealis, a purple Rivian opened to early reservation holders on September 15, almost four weeks after Forest Green, which has 60 orders with a VIN and 15 deliveries out of 155, against Forest Green’s 22 and 17.

The pipeline also shows little relief in the near term, with Forest Green making up 3% of the 102 R2 deliveries Roamer users have booked for the week of October 26, against 25% for Launch Green, 24% for Catalina Cove and 12% for Borealis.

Roamer counts only R2s whose owners link their Rivian accounts, not every vehicle Rivian has built, but the trend has held for weeks, since on September 29 the tracker showed 134 of 147 Forest Green orders waiting for a VIN and six delivered.

Inside the Quoted Window

Rivian has told buyers to expect a longer wait for the color, so the data do not yet show it missing its own estimate.

The company emailed “select early R2 reservation holders” on August 18 and 19 offering early access to Forest Green and the Coastal Cloud interior, quoting eight to 12 weeks, and opened both to all buyers on September 9.

Its support page on R2 order invitations still lists Forest Green, Borealis and Coastal Cloud at “8–12 weeks” from order confirmation, against Esker Silver at six to 10 weeks and a general “4-8 weeks” for other builds, a table Rivian added in September.

An order confirmed on August 19 would reach the 12-week mark around November 11, so the earliest Forest Green buyers are about nine weeks in, past the eight-week low end of the estimate but short of the top.

Suppliers’ Impact

The color sits on top of a production ramp that Rivian has said is limited by its supply base.

Founder and Chief Executive RJ Scaringe said in September that the R2 ramp is gated by tier-two and tier-three suppliersand that “we can only ramp as fast as our slowest ramping supplier.”

Rivian said earlier this month that a second R2 production shift began before the end of September at its Normal, Illinois plant, and the highest R2 VIN seen on Roamer is now above 17,000.

Cox Automotive estimates Rivian sold 3,456 R2s in the US in the third quarter, all of them the $57,990 R2 Performance with Launch Package, the only version on sale.

Rivian reports third-quarter results on October 29.
