Nio Group’s European Registrations Fall in August Despite Sub-Brand’s First Deliveries

Shanghai-based Nio Group registered 88 vehicles in Europe in August, as the company prepares to further expand in the region.

Through the end of 2026, the company will more than triple the number of European markets it is present as it adopts a new dealership model for new countries via local distributors.

Segment wise, it is also expanding.

After a weaker than expected expansion with its core brand since Norway’s arrival in 2021, the company founded and led by William Li delivered the first vehicles of its Firefly sub-brand in Europe last month.

On August 14, the first batch of Firefly vehicles were handed over to customers in both Norway and the Netherlands.

The group’s figures – which now include the sub-brand – represent a 24.1% decrease compared to the same period a year ago, when it had sold 116 units.

Sequentially, registrations dropped by 17.8%.

The EV maker had listed 107 vehicles in July, from which seven units were Firefly test-drive vehicles registered in Norway and the Netherlands, ahead of the first customer deliveries in mid-August.

The Nio Group currently operates in five European countries — Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden — and recently debuted in Belgium, where Nio and Firefly vehicles will arrive showrooms on September 20.

The company will launch in more than a dozen new European markets over the next 18 months, including Austria, Hungary, Luxembourg, Poland, the Czech Republic, Greece, Bulgaria, Cyprus, among others.

In Norway, Nio sold 29 units across its two brands, according to the platform Elbilstatistikk, with two of them were Firefly units. The company had registered 25 Nio vehicles in July in a total of 31 units.

A year ago, Nio had sold 79 vehicles with its main brand alone, meaning that monthly registrations plunged 63.3%.

Last month, the brand registered 29 vehicles in Sweden, reaching a new record since it expanded to the Nordic country in October 2022.

The result was driven by a major campaign on the ET5 sedan, which represented all of the units sold, according to data from Mobility Sweden.

August figures nearly doubled sequentially and year over year, as the brand had listed 15 vehicles in both July 2025 and August 2024.

In the Danish market, no Nio vehicle was sold from January to July. In August, and according to Mobility Denmark, six vehicles from the group were registered.

These vehicles are Firefly test-drive EVs, as the sub-brand will be re-entering the country soon, as Nio revises its business model to include dealerships and lower costs.

Nearly three years after entering the market, the Nio brand has sold less than 50 vehicles there.

In 2024, Nio registered a total of five units in the Danish market.

Shanghai-based Nio Group has registered 24 vehicles in the Netherlands last month, as it started deliveries of its sub-brand Firefly in the country.

According to data published by BOVAG, the company registered 18 Nio units and six Firefly vehicles, resulting in an increase of two units when compared to the 22 vehicles sold a year ago.

If considering only the Nio brand, registrations dropped by four units from August 2024.

In Germany, Nio sold 23 vehicles. Sales dropped by 34.3% compared to the 35 units sold a year ago and halved from the 47 units sold in July — when the brand had set its highest monthly registrations since April 2024.

Nio‘s battery swap system is present in Europe through its 61 Nio Power swap stations — with a new one having just opened in Hamburg. It is also the 21st battery swap station in Germany.

Nio reached its 200,000th battery swap in Europe last month, less than nine months after surpassing the 100,000 mark.

The company features several retail locations across Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Norway.

In Germany — Europe’s largest automotive market — the brand has established four Nio Houses (Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Düsseldorf) and three Nio Hubs (Munich, Köln and Weiterstadt).
