The electric vehicle (EV) competition in China has been increasing over the last months — and years — with the German legacy manufacturers having a tough time to increase (or even maintain) the demand for its cars there.
In the same week that Volkswagen Group reported that Porsche China sales in the the first half of the year crashed 33 percent from 2023, Audi has started promoting its Q5L SUV highlighting its capability to safely navigate through water up to a depth of 500mm.
The advertisement positions the Audi Q5L as having the highest wading depth capability when compared to the premium SUVs from Nio, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

In the advertisement, Audi is comparing the Q5L to the Nio‘s entry model SUV, the ES6 (named EL6 in Europe) which is listed with a wading depth of 450mm, and with the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC both with a wading depth of 400mm.
In a recent post on the Nio App — which was shared on X by the industry expert Lei Xing — Nio showed that sold 3,065 units from its Coupe SUV EC6 from May 27 until the end of June.
In comparison, the sales from its competitors Porsche Macan, BMW X4, Audi Q5L Sportback and Mercedes GLC Coupe stood at 2,686 units — combined.

Last week, the German media outlet Automobilwoche reported that Audi will stop selling its EV model e-tron GT in the country after having sold 188 units since late 2022.
On a global scale, Audi has committed to launching over 20 new EV and non-EV models until the end of 2025, transitioning to exclusively electric models starting in 2026.
