Smart has placed production versions of its #2 two-seater on public display in Beijing, Shenzhen and Shanghai, the first uncamouflaged appearance of the car outside regulatory filings, five weeks before the Mercedes-Benz–Geely brand gives the model its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show.
The brand’s Chinese account announced the display on Weibo on Saturday, listing three locations: Beijing’s Sanlitun district, the Shenzhen Bay MixC Phase II mall, and Yongfu Road in Shanghai.
The nine pictures shared show the cars in promotional wraps rather than test camouflage, one in red parked beside a black Mercedes-Benz G-Class.
From Filing to Street
The production #2 first surfaced on August 7, when China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology published homologation images and data for the car, listing two body lengths of 2,751 mm and 2,764 mm, a width of 1,669 mm, a height of 1,555 mm, a 1,875 mm wheelbase and a kerb weight of 1,130 kg.
The filing confirmed a rear-mounted 60 kW (80 hp) permanent-magnet motor from Geely’s InfiMotion unit, a top speed of 140 km/h, a lithium iron phosphate battery with cells from CATL assembled by Geely’s Energee, and production at Zhejiang Haoqing Automobile Manufacturing, a Geely plant.
Smart had announced on July 20 that the car was undergoing global testing in a black-and-white camouflage livery designed by Mercedes-Benz’s design team, targeting what it called “unmatched urban agility, driving stability, elevated NVH refinement and uncompromising safety.”
What Smart Has Committed To
The brand unveiled the Concept #2 at its Global Brand Event in Beijing on April 22 under the claim “Unconventional. Again.,” then showed it at Auto Beijing two days later and gave it a European debut in Rome on June 22, where it disclosed most of the technical targets.
The car sits on a newly developed Electric Compact Architecture designed for ultra-compact EVs, with wheels pushed to the corners and a kerb-to-kerb turning circle of 6.95 metres, the same as the original Fortwo; the platform accommodates wheelbases from 1,875 to 2,500 mm, leaving room for further models.
Smart gives the battery as 35.7 kWh and the range as around 300 km on the WLTP cycle, both described as targets pending homologation, with DC charging from 10% to 80% in under 20 minutes and vehicle-to-load capability.
Smart Europe has said it is targeting a starting price below €22,500, in the lower half of a previously indicated €20,000 to €25,000 band, with final pricing to be announced in Paris.
The brand’s European chief Wolfgang Ufer has said the car “will be the best two-seater we have ever built.”
The 91st Paris Motor Show opens to the press on October 12 and to the public from October 13 to 18 at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles.
European sales are planned from the second quarter of 2027 through Mercedes-Benz’s retail and service network, and Smart has said the car will be built in China for the domestic market and for export to Europe and other markets from the outset.
The Two-Seater
The Fortwo, launched in 1998 and built in Hambach, France, was discontinued in 2024 after three generations, leaving the reconstituted brand with only larger crossovers, the #1, #3 and #5, since its relaunch under Geely-Mercedes ownership.
Smart says the #2 will offer roughly double the battery capacity and range of the last electric Fortwo.
The brand’s sales rose 8% year on year in the first half of 2026 and its footprint reached 41 markets across six continents after entries into Costa Rica and Argentina, according to its July 3 release, which reported growth of 446% in Finland, 276% in Hong Kong, 144% in Sweden and 140% in Germany without giving unit totals.
In China, where the street campaign is running, the brand delivered 2,974 vehicles in the first two months of 2026, according to China EV DataTracker figures cited by ArenaEV.
Smart’s fifth model, the #6 EHD plug-in hybrid fastback, opened for pre-orders in China on April 24 from RMB 189,900 and is sold only in that market.
