Polestar 2 Goes Out of Production in China as Brand Readies an All-New Model

Production of the Polestar 2 has ended in China after more than 200,000 cars, closing the run of the electric fastback that launched the Swedish brand, with an all-new successor not due until early 2027.

The last vehicles have rolled off the line at the plant in China, Norway’s TV 2 Broom reported on October 20. Polestar has stopped accepting factory orders for the model in Norway and Sweden, where its websites now point buyers to cars already in stock.

“The configuration is not available for new orders. Compare your configuration with cars ready for delivery,” Polestar’s Swedish website says.

Polestar has not issued a statement announcing the end of production, and none had appeared by Monday.

In Denmark, where about 12,000 Polestar 2s have been sold, the car is effectively sold out. Polestar Denmark said it still had cars in stock, but its website shows none.

6.5 years in Luqiao

The Polestar 2 was built at a Geely-owned, Volvo-operated plant in Luqiao, in the eastern Chinese city of Taizhou. Production began there on March 24, 2020, Polestar said at the time, initially for Europe and then for China and North America.

It was the first fully electric car produced by Volvo Car Group, and Polestar’s first all-electric model. It grew out of Volvo’s 40.2 concept, shown in 2016 alongside the 40.1 that became the XC40.

The plant passed 100,000 Polestar 2s in late 2022, about two and a half years after production began.

Polestar said in February that it had sold more than 190,000 Polestar 2s. Total production passed 200,000, according to TV 2 Broom. Polestar has not published a final production figure.

The model received its largest update in 2024, including a new rear-wheel-drive powertrain.

Norway’s favorite Polestar

Norway was one of the model’s biggest markets, with more than 16,000 sold there, TV 2 Broom reported.

“Polestar 2 has been a great success and gave us a flying start in Norway,” Stian Gihle, Head of Communications at Polestar Norway, told the outlet earlier this year. He said the 2024 update would keep the model current “well into 2026.”

Canada is the exception. The Polestar 2 left the Canadian market in March 2025, when a 100% tariff on Chinese-built EVs stopped imports.

It returned on June 3 after Canada cut the tariff to 6.1% for vehicles imported under its China EV quota, with a 2027 model-year car from C$69,900.

Polestar planned to bring in more than 1,000 Polestar 2s under the quota, Automotive News Canada reported in June. Polestar Canada said at the relaunch that more than 7,300 Polestar 2s were already on Canadian roads.

Polestar’s Canadian configurator still accepted builds on Monday, with a C$250 ($180) deposit and a reduced price of C$64,900 ($46,300) for the Long Range Dual Motor version. A lease offer on the page requires delivery by November 2. Polestar has not said whether those orders will be filled from existing production or stock.

The model was included in the discounts of up to C$15,000 Polestar offered in Canada through September.

Shut out of the US

The Polestar 2 will not return to the United States. The Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security declined on June 25 to authorize Polestar under the Connected Vehicle Rule, barring it from selling new cars in the US from the 2027 model year.

“The automotive industry is entering a new phase, based on regional dynamics,” Chief Executive Officer Michael Lohscheller said at the time. “Our strategy reflects that, with Europe being our largest growth engine and our plan to manufacture Polestar 7 in Europe.”

Polestar has been clearing its remaining US stock. US sales more than doubled to about 2,160 cars in the third quarter, about 15% of its global retail sales of an estimated 14,371, while sales outside the US fell 8%.

The successor

Polestar announced a “completely new successor” to the Polestar 2 in February, as part of four new models in three years. It plans to launch it early in 2027.

“Polestar 2 is the foundation of our brand, with over 190,000 cars sold and an enthusiastic community of customers,” Lohscheller said. “Bringing the next generation of this iconic car in record speed, by the start of next year, is very exciting.”

Polestar has not said where the new model will be built or what platform it will use. Reports differ on its shape.

Swedish site Carup reported it will keep the Polestar 2 name with a lower, sportier body. It quoted chassis chief Joakim Rydholm, via Auto Express, naming the new BMW i3 as the target: “We have to beat the new BMW i3.”

Polestar has confirmed only that the Polestar 7, a compact SUV due in 2028, will be built in Europe, at Volvo’s new plant in Košice, Slovakia.

A gap in the lineup

The end of production leaves Polestar without new Polestar 2s to build for at least several months. In Europe, buyers are being directed to stock until the successor arrives.

Polestar’s other models are built in China, South Korea and the US.

The Polestar 4 coupe and new Polestar 4 SUV are produced at Renault Korea’s plant in Busan, where Polestar said it had built the first 5,000 Polestar 4 SUVs. The Polestar 3 is built in Ridgeville, South Carolina, as well as in China.

Polestar said its nine-month retail sales reached an estimated 44,790 vehicles.
