China’s Station Wagon Boom Widens as XPeng Is Spotted Testing Its First

XPeng is developing the first station wagon in its history without having acknowledged the vehicle exists, entering a segment that several Chinese brands have reached in the last few years.

A camouflaged prototype was photographed on public roads on Wednesday, arriving at the brand’s headquarters, the third sighting in the last few months.

The Guangzhou-based automaker has not announced the model, named it, shown it undisguised, or confirmed its development.

The side view establishes the body style. The roof runs flat back from the B-pillar before dropping over the tail, a proportion closer to a low shooting brake than a square estate, with a deep rear quarter window and a spoiler on the tailgate.

The front three-quarter frame shows a closed-off nose without a grille aperture, a blacked-out A-pillar and camera housings on the door mirrors.

The Codename

The vehicle carries the internal designation D11T, with the “T” for Travel, according to 21st Century Business Herald, which cited several people familiar with the plan on July 8.

The same report described an A-segment sport utility vehicle of about 4.4 metres codenamed D11.

Mona model codes elsewhere run D01 for the M03, D02 for the L05 and D03 for the L03.

No Filing and No Show Car

The wagon has not appeared in a filing with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the regulatory step at which a Chinese model acquires published dimensions, weights, motor supplier and battery chemistry.

XPeng filed the G9L, the Mona L05 and the range-extender L03 with the ministry in May.

The L05 submission produced a complete specification: 4,870 millimetres long on a 2,940-millimetre wheelbase, a 183-kilowatt drive motor and CALB lithium iron phosphate cells in the electric version, with a 70-kilowatt generator from Seres subsidiary Chongqing Xiaokang and Eve Energy cells in the range-extender.

Rival Wagons

Rivals are moving through the same process.

BYD‘s Fang Cheng Bao Formula S GT appeared in the ministry’s 408th batch before pre-orders opened this month.

The wagon was also absent from the Chengdu Auto Show that opened on August 21, where XPeng gave the G9L its first major show appearance and three rival wagons occupied stands.

Management said nothing about the vehicle on the second-quarter earnings call on August 24.

The roadmap disclosed there covers the G9L, with Chinese deliveries starting in September and the Mona L05 due in the fourth quarter, overseas L03 deliveries in the fourth quarter, and extended-range models reaching overseas markets in 2027.

An internal source told the blogger who published the June photographs that the project was genuine and would not launch during 2026.

Geely’s Lynk & Co launched the 07 GT on July 23, its first wagon: 4,846 millimetres on the CMA Evo 2.0 architecture, a plug-in hybrid with a 28.3-kilowatt-hour pack rated above 200 kilometres of electric range, roof LiDAR as standard and up to 523 horsepower.

Changan’s Avatr introduced the 06T, 4,940 millimetres on a 2,940-millimetre wheelbase, with Huawei driver assistance, CATL fast charging and a camera mirror in place of rear window glass. SAIC’s Huawei-backed Shangjie brand added the 5,036-millimetre Z7T on Huawei’s Tuling platform with 81 and 100-kilowatt-hour packs.

The GAC-Huawei venture Qijing launched the GT7, carrying an 896-line Huawei LiDAR.

Zeekr brought a refreshed 007 GT to market in June at 202,900 to 252,900 yuan.

They join a standing field of Nio‘s ET5 Touring, the Zeekr 001, BYD‘s Denza Z9 GT, Chery’s Exeed ES GT, the Stelato S9T and the Seal 06 DM-i Touring. Huawei software or platforms sit inside four of them.

Nio has also been spotted roadtesting its station wagon in China.

Fang Cheng Bao is next.

BYD‘s off-road brand opened nationwide pre-orders on August 20 for the Formula S liftback and Formula S GT shooting brake at 230,000 to 280,000 yuan ($34,200 to $41,500), debuted both at Chengdu the following day and has scheduled the formal launch for the third quarter, leaving at most five weeks.

Nio co-founder and president Qin Lihong said in May that a new wagon for the main brand was arranged. Camouflaged mules have since been photographed, without establishing whether the car is a next-generation ET5 Touring or a separate nameplate.

Chery is reported to be preparing a Fengyun A9L GT off the A9L saloon, and SAIC’s MG to have filed design patents for a wagon version of the MG 07.

Neither manufacturer has confirmed its programme and neither has an on-sale date.

The Price Floor

Most wagons launched in China over the past year started above 200,000 yuan ($29,800), leaving the affordable end of the segment almost empty.

That has changed within two months. Lynk & Co opened 07 GT pre-sales on June 29 at 165,800 to 185,800 yuan, then launched on July 23 with limited-time pricing on its three regular variants of 145,800 to 165,800 yuan ($21,800 to $24,700), a floor 12.1% below where pre-sales began.

The brand reported more than 35,000 orders across 24 days of pre-sales. The Seal 06 DM-i Touring sits below that.

No price for the D11T has been disclosed or reported.

The refreshed M03 sedan starts at 119,800 yuan ($18,000) and the L03 at 123,800 yuan ($18,600), and a wagon body normally carries a premium over the sedan it derives from.

Segment Size

China’s shooting-brake and station wagon market recorded roughly 176,000 sales in 2025, less than 1% of total passenger vehicle volume, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

Sales are expected to reach about 250,000 units in 2026, growth near 40% that leaves the category under 3% of the market.

Individual wagons have outsold the sedans they derive from.

The Stelato S9T outsold its S9 sedan sibling by more than four to one in December and by about 1,200 units in February.

Mona

The M03 passed 280,000 deliveries in just over 600 days, averaging more than 13,000 a month, chief executive He Xiaopeng said at the L03 pre-sale event on July 2.

He said the model had led China’s 100,000-to-200,000-yuan pure electric sedan segment for consecutive months.

The sedan accounted for close to 40% of XPeng‘s roughly 125,800 deliveries across the first five months of 2026, at about 48,000 units.

Delivery Target

XPeng is targeting 550,000 to 600,000 global deliveries in 2026. Third-quarter guidance of 115,000 to 121,000 vehicles leaves the annual target requiring a record fourth quarter, with management targeting monthly deliveries above 60,000 by then.

Second-quarter results missed consensus and the shares fell. By the time the wagon reaches showrooms, the space below 200,000 yuan will no longer be empty.
