Tesla announced on Monday that the Cybercab will be the first vehicle in its lineup with direct Starlink V5 integration, embedding SpaceX’s latest satellite terminal into the purpose-built robotaxi.
The company’s official X account posted an image of the layout with the caption “Starlink V5 directly integrated in Cybercab.”
Additionally, a hardware diagram displayed at Tesla‘s renovated Santana Row showroom in California, which now centres on autonomous driving technology, labels “Starlink Integration.”
The integration is mentioned alongside the vehicle’s cameras, dual GPS antennas, 5G LTE antenna, interior and exterior microphones, emergency stop button, and Full Self-Driving computer.
Hours later, VP of AI Software Ashok Elluswamy clarified on X that the satellite link is not a safety-critical system.
“It is still not required for safe operation of the vehicle,” Elluswamy wrote. “Connectivity is primarily meant for navigation, customer service and, in general, fleet management.”
What Starlink V5 Adds
SpaceX unveiled the V5 terminal last week.
The hardware is 35% smaller and 62% lighter than the V4 it replaces, weighing 1.1 kg and measuring roughly 306 × 384 mm.
Average power draw sits between 35 and 50 watts — about half of the V4’s 75 to 100 watts — and download speeds reach 375 Mbps or higher.
Wind resistance jumps from 97 km/h on the V4 to 265 km/h on the V5.
In the Cybercab, the terminal appears mounted in the rear of the vehicle, behind the passenger compartment and possibly beneath the trunk lid.
Earlier prototypes carried externally mounted Starlink Mini dishes bolted to the rear liftgate — a setup first photographed in May, when images shared on X by Adan Guajardo showed a Cybercab testing on public roads with the portable terminal visible from the outside.
Passenger Experience
For passengers riding without a human driver, the satellite link opens high-speed internet access for 4K streaming, video calls, and gaming — use cases CEO Elon Musk highlighted on X.
“Watch 4K streaming video while Cybercab takes you anywhere you want,” he wrote on Tuesday, reacting to Tesla‘s announcement.
For Tesla‘s operations team, Starlink provides a backup connectivity layer for navigation, over-the-air updates, remote vehicle support, dispatch, and fleet management, particularly in areas where cellular coverage is weak or unavailable.
The Cybercab’s robotaxi service currently operates in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami and, as of Tuesday, in Tampa and Orlando.
Starlink integration future-proofs the fleet for expansion into areas where LTE and 5G coverage is less reliable, a consideration that grows as Tesla targets broader US deployment.
No consumer Tesla model — Model Y, Model 3, Cybertruck, or otherwise — currently ships with built-in Starlink hardware.
Owners can add aftermarket Starlink kits, and some Cybertruck promotional materials reference a Starlink Performance Kit for mobile use.
Shareholders Press on Cybercab
The announcement landed one day before Tesla‘s second-quarter earnings call, scheduled for July 22 at 5:30 p.m. ET.
Investor questions submitted through the Say Technologies platform show sustained pressure on the robotaxi rollout.
The top-voted question, backed by 627 votes representing 5.4 million shares, asks: “What are the main constraints to expanding robotaxi operations faster, and how do you see that lining up with Cybercab production?”
Another, with 682 votes, confronts the company directly: “Tesla has missed short term guidance on robotaxi 3 earnings reports in a row […] What is keeping Tesla back from accomplishing these short term goals?”
Tesla committed in January to launching robotaxi service in seven new cities during the first half of 2026.
Only Dallas and Houston opened during that window; Miami launched days into the second half. Phoenix, Orlando, Tampa, and Las Vegas remain in preparation.
The unsupervised Texas fleet stood at roughly 175 registered vehicles as of mid-July.
Cybercab production has been underway at Gigafactory Texas since mid-February, with steering-wheel-free builds confirmed in April.
The company’s first-quarter update stated that once in volume production, the Cybercab would begin replacing the existing Model Y fleet and become the highest-volume vehicle in the robotaxi network over time.
Tesla has not disclosed when Cybercab customer rides will begin, what subscription model — if any — will accompany the Starlink connectivity, or a firm production-rate target beyond the general commitment to ramp through 2026.
