Rivian has launched its Rivian Care vehicle protection program in California, taking the optional coverage to 47 US states, according to the company’s support page and an invitation email sent to an owner.
“We are happy to announce we have officially launched Rivian Care in California and that your vehicle is eligible to enroll,” the EV maker wrote in the email, which a Rivian owner and X user ‘omg_tesla’ posted on Wednesday.
Rivian’s support page now states that the program “is available in 47 states, including California”.
A page shown to account holders in late July said the company planned to bring Rivian Care to California in October.
Rivian registered 3,970 vehicles in California in the first half of 2026, according to the California New Car Dealers Association.
Enrollment by Invitation
The email describes the offer as a “limited-time invitation” that lets the owner “opt into Rivian Care without requiring a physical vehicle inspection”. It asks the owner to enroll by January 1, 2027 “to secure your eligibility”.
Rivian says on its support site that existing owners can join only during invitation cycles, which it runs every month with limited places.
“The invitation process lets first-hand owners opt into the same baseline coverage without a physical vehicle inspection,” the company says.
An invitation link stays valid until the date given in the email. After that, an owner cannot enroll without an inspection, under a separate program that Rivian says will launch in 2027.
Buyers of a new or Rivian Pre-Owned vehicle can add the coverage during the purchase process and include it in their loan or lease.
Three States Left Out
Massachusetts, Alaska and Hawaii remain outside the program.
“We don’t have immediate plans to launch in Massachusetts, Alaska, or Hawaii,” Rivian says on the page.
It names one exception, the Hawaiian island of O’ahu, where the program is due to launch in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The new total is lower than the 48 states reported in July, even with California added.
That earlier count treated every state except California and Massachusetts as covered, and so included Alaska and Hawaii, which Rivian now lists as not planned.
Some benefits are also restricted in states where the program is sold.
Windshield cover is not offered in Arizona or Florida, and windshield replacement is not offered in Georgia, Maine, Minnesota, New York, South Carolina or Texas.
Key replacement is not offered in Connecticut, Pennsylvania or Vermont.
From a Texas Pilot to 47 States
Rivian Care began in May 2025 as a pilot limited to owners in Texas.
It was available in six states in early June this year. On July 1, Rivian expanded it to 31 states and made the R2 eligible, three weeks after deliveries of the sport utility vehicle began.
Florida, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, New Jersey and Washington followed later that month.
What the Program Covers
Rivian Care consists of two optional products that owners can buy separately or together.
Both are provided and administered by companies operating under the Assurant name, not by Rivian itself.
United Service Protection Corporation is the provider in every state except Florida and Oklahoma, where related Assurant entities are used.
The Vehicle Service Contract helps pay to repair or replace the high-voltage battery, drivetrain, mechanical components and safety systems after a covered breakdown.
Battery cover under that contract runs up to 200,000 miles.
The contract takes effect when the factory New Vehicle Limited Warranty ends, by time or mileage, and some wear items are covered from the start.
Rivian gives the example of a new R2, whose comprehensive warranty lasts four years or 50,000 miles, extended to six years in total with a two-year contract.
The second product, Preferred Vehicle Protection, covers windshield damage, tire and wheel damage and paintless dent repair.
It excludes dents larger than four inches and windshield cracks longer than six inches.
Replacement parts under either plan “may be new, used, non-OEM, or remanufactured,” according to Rivian’s disclosures.
The program covers a given part only once.
“If that same part fails or breaks again during the term, Rivian Care no longer covers it,” the company says on its support site.
A replaced part is then covered by Rivian’s separate service parts warranty, which lasts 24 months, and some items such as headlamp bulbs may be replaced without limit.
Who Qualifies
A vehicle must be less than eight years old and have fewer than 80,000 miles to qualify.
It must be registered for personal use and maintained to Rivian’s schedule.
For now, the program is open only to customers buying directly from Rivian and to original owners.
A leased vehicle is eligible on the same terms as a purchased one.
Second-hand owners, and buyers of Rivian Pre-Owned vehicles who did not add the cover at purchase, must wait for the inspection-based program in 2027.
The same rules currently apply to both products, which Rivian says could change in 2027.
Rivian does not publish prices. It says quotes vary by location, mileage, term and deductible, and that cover costs less when bought while the factory warranty is still active.
Both plans can be transferred to a later buyer, subject to the contract and a possible fee.
An owner who moves to another state keeps the original contract terms for the full period, according to the support page.
