Nio Brand Sales in Netherlands Down 50% Year-to-Date After August Drop

Shanghai-based Nio Group has registered 24 vehicles in the Netherlands last month, as it started deliveries of its sub-brand Firefly in the country.

According to data published by BOVAG, the company registered 18 Nio units and six Firefly vehicles, resulting in an increase of two units when compared to the 22 vehicles sold a year ago.

If considering only the Nio brand, registrations dropped by four units from August 2024.

From January 1 to August 31, the Nio brand registered 81 vehicles in the country, less than a half of the 170 units sold in the first eight months of 2024.

In July, the company had registered 20 vehicles, resulting in a sales decrease of one unit for the Nio brand, as one of the vehicles registered in the prior month was a Firefly test-drive unit.

Globally, the Nio brand delivered 10,525 vehicles in August, down 47.8% from the 20,176 units sold a year earlier.

The August figure marked the steepest year-on-year drop so far in 2025, extending a string of weak performances in global deliveries of the premium brand.

Nio‘s portfolio in the Netherlands includes its ET7, ET5 and ET5T sedans, plus the EL6 (ES6), EL7 (ES7) and EL8 (ES8) SUVs.

In July, 17 out of the 19 Nio vehicles sold in the Dutch market were ET7 sedans, with the ET5 and EL8 representing the remaining units.

However, in August, 17 out of the 18 units registered were the brand’s cheapest model, the ET5 sedan, which is priced from €50,033, equivalent to $58,300. The starting price includes the VAT and Nio‘s Battery as a Service (BaaS) subscription.

Nio‘s battery swap system is present in Europe through its 61 Nio Power swap stations, from which eight are located in the Netherlands.

The Nio Group currently operates in five European countries — Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden — and is entering Belgium this month, where it also has a battery swap station since late 2024, despite not selling its models there yet.

The company will launch in more than a dozen new European markets over the next 18 months, including Austria, Hungary, Luxembourg, Poland, the Czech Republic, Greece, Bulgaria, Cyprus, among others.

In Norway, where it also started deliveries of the Firefly model last month, Nio sold 29 units across its two brands, according to the platform Elbilstatistikk. Two of them were Firefly units.

Last month, the brand registered 29 vehicles in Sweden, reaching a new record since it expanded to the Nordic country in October 2022. The result was also driven by a major campaign on the ET5 sedan.

In Germany, it sold 23 vehicles. Sales dropped by 34.3% compared to August 2024 and halved from the 47 units sold in July — when the brand had set its highest monthly registrations since April 2024.
