China Chamber of Commerce to the EU has alerted that Chinese electric vehicle makers will re-evaluate their investments in Europe if the extra duties on imported EVs are confirmed.

“Certain Chinese companies noted that if the EU proceeds with the imposition of additional tariffs, their existing investment plans would have to be re-evaluated as their confidence in the EU’s investment environment would be diminished,” China Chamber of Commerce to the EU said after meeting in Brussels with around 30 companies and industry associations from the EV sector.

These EV makers emphasized that the old continent remains a critical market for them expressing “hopes for greater technological and market cooperation between the two sides.”

Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao reiterated that EU-imposed punitive tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles would also harm European companies’ production operations in China and affect their exports back to Europe.

China Chamber of Commerce noted that both Chinese and European automakers “reiterated their hope” that the European Commission would refrain from imposing anti-subsidy tariffs on China-made EVs.

At the meeting, both parties called for a “swift resolution of mutual concerns through dialogue and consultation,” as CCCEU noted in a statement.

Earlier this week, also Germany’s Economy Minister Robert Habeck met Mr. Wang Wentao and urged a “political solution” defending that the tariffs “ultimately harm both sides at all costs”.
