Shenzhen-based BYD saw its sales in China increase 10% between April 21 and 27, data shared on Chinese social media this Tuesday showed.
The company sold 62,200 vehicles, marking its best week of the second quarter and the fourth best week year to date.
The China giant experienced a 25% drop at the start of the quarter, as production and sales usually slow down, registering 45,100 units in the first week of April.
However, it has since been recovering, returning to above 60,000 weekly units last week. Between March 31 and April 27, the brand sold 216,800 vehicles in its home market.
China Competitors
The Beijing-based carmaker Li Auto sold 8,600 units, with XPeng registering 7,200 vehicles and Xiaomi recording 7,000 EVs.
Li Auto is the top selling new energy vehicle startup in China year to date, having sold over 121,800 units. XPeng is just below, with 116,300 cars sold since the first of January.
BYD, which sells both hybrid and fully electric models, sold 840,000 units year to date, while the second best selling brand, the EV maker Tesla, registered 159,600 fully electric vehicles in the same period.
Sales Targets
The company set a global goal of 5.5 million vehicle sales for this year, including 800,000 units overseas. BYD sold 1,000,804 units worldwide in the first quarter, reaching 18% of its 2025 target.
In Europe, the company is setting record sales, with sales jumping over 750% in the UK and more than 400% in Germany in March.
According to a Financial Times report published on Tuesday, BYD expects European sales in 2025 to account for 20% of its total exports. About half of the vehicles exported are hybrid models, which are exempt from EU tariffs.
Last week, Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility — BYD‘s dealership in the United Arab Emirates — announced the brand plans to deploy 200 fully electric taxis in Dubai. The initiative in in collaboration with Dubai Taxi Corporation and will feature BYD’s Seal model.
According to a Nikkei report, BYD is also working on a kei car for the Japanese market — the first time the company is developing a country-specific vehicle. The electric vehicle is planned to launch in the second quarter of 2026. These models represent 40% of new car sales in Japan.
Last Friday, the company reported first-quarter profits were up 100% year over year, with a net profit of 9.2 billion yuan ($1.26 billion) — within the company’s estimate of 8.5 to 10 billion yuan.
Shanghai Auto Show
BYD unveiled five new models from its Ocean series last week at the Shanghai Auto Show. Besides the Ocean-S concept car, a flaship sedan showcased at the event, the models are set to launch globally in the third quarter of this year.
The company announced the upcoming launch of the SeaLion 06 SUV later this quarter, which will be available in two versions: a fully electric model (SeaLion 06 EV) and a plug-in hybrid variant (SeaLion 06 DM-i).
