Tesla Plans Over 100 Megacharger Stalls in Europe for Semi, Exec Says

Tesla plans an initial European rollout of “more than 100 MCS-equipped charging stalls” for buyers of its Semi electric truck, the head of the programme said at the IAA Transportation show in Hannover.

A slide shown at the event put the initial rollout at more than 100 charging stalls, each capable of 1.2 megawatts and adding more than 60% of range in 30 minutes, above a map with markers concentrated in Britain, France, the Low Countries and Germany, and one in southern Sweden. 

Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Sweden, the Netherlands and Belgium among the countries covered, with more to follow — according to EVwire‘s founder Jan who attended the event.

Tesla does not currently operate a public Megacharger anywhere in Europe, and has named no first site and given no date beyond the 2027 start of Semi deliveries.

The Factory Behind It

Dan Priestley, who runs Tesla’s Semi programme, set out the production side at the same event.

“We have a plan for an aggressive ramp,” he said. “This factory will grow and serve our initial demand in North America and Europe. It has a designed production capacity of 1,000 trucks per week.”

A thousand trucks a week is about 52,000 a year.

Priestley is reported to have used both a weekly figure of 1,000 and an annual figure of 50,000 in the same remarks, so the two should be quoted rather than reconciled.

The plant sits next to Gigafactory Nevada and began ramping high-volume production in April.

The first European trucks are expected to come from Nevada. Tesla has committed to first European deliveries in 2027 without naming a month.

A Wider Map

The countries named in the Megacharger account are broader than those where Tesla began selling chargers on Monday.

Tesla opened its Semi Charging for Business programme in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and the United Kingdom on Monday, the show’s press day, inviting fleet operators to buy Megachargers and Basechargers for their own depots.

Sweden does not appear in that programme. The map shown at IAA carries a marker in southern Sweden.

It is the home of Einride, the freight company that placed the largest Semi order announced so far, 500 trucks, though those are destined for North American routes.

The distinction between the two announcements matters. The charger sales programme asks customers to buy hardware for their own sites. The Megacharger network is Tesla’s own.

The Numbers

The figure is stalls, not chargers or sites. A Megacharger cabinet can serve more than one post, so more than 100 stalls does not mean more than 100 cabinets and certainly does not mean more than 100 locations.

The 1.2 megawatt rating applies to the stall and is the same figure Tesla quotes in the United States. Tesla’s European Semi pages give 800 kilowatts for the truck itself, so the network is being specified above the capability of the model arriving first. That is not a contradiction.

The headroom covers posts sharing a cabinet and any longer-range model Tesla adds later.

The European truck is a single Standard Range tractor rated at 550 kilometres at 40 tonnes, with energy consumption of 1.0 kilowatt-hour per kilometre and a kerb weight under 9,100 kilograms. Tesla has published no European battery size and no European price.

The Long Range version sold in the United States, which charges at 1.2 megawatts, is not part of the initial European offer.

The Competition

Megawatt charging for trucks already exists in Europe. Milence, a joint venture of Daimler Truck, Traton and Volvo, operates the largest network, and Iberdrola is also installing high-power sites.

The Semi uses the seven-pin megawatt charging system connector, so it can charge on other operators’ hardware. Tesla is building a network for a truck that does not require it.
