Rivian’s US Sales Hit 2026 High in July, the First Full R2 Month

Rivian sold an estimated 4,700 vehicles in the United States in July, up 11.9% from a year earlier and 10.1% from June, according to data from research firm Motor Intelligence published on Monday.

The figures mark the company’s strongest month of 2026, recorded in the first full month of R2 customer deliveries.

The company raised R1 lease rates at the start of July, days before its second-quarter delivery release, before walking the increases back by month’s end and fully restoring June pricing in the August offer sheet.

The R2 itself sold through the month with no purchase incentives and a lease structure whose pricing drew documented buyer backlash at launch.

Growth at worsened-then-restored pricing is the strongest available signal that the R2’s order bank converts without subsidy.

Motor Intelligence‘s estimates cover US retail sales in its passenger-car and light-truck categories — capturing the R1T, R1S and R2 but structurally excluding Rivian‘s EDV commercial vans, which are not retail vehicles.

The company’s official quarterly totals count everything, vans and Canadian deliveries included, so the two series are related but not directly comparable.

The Guidance Math

The July estimate is the first monthly datapoint under Rivian‘s raised outlook.

After delivering 12,194 vehicles in the second quarter against an outlook of 9,000 to 11,000, beating momentum established in the first quarter, the company lifted its full-year delivery guidance from 62,000–67,000 to 65,000–70,000 vehicles, attributing the beat to robust growth in EDV and R1 “coupled with the introduction of R2 deliveries.”

The arithmetic that guidance implies is demanding: with 22,559 delivered in the first half, the new range requires 42,441 to 47,441 vehicles across the final six months — roughly 7,100 to 7,900 a month globally, vans included.

A US retail estimate of 4,700 in the ramp’s first full month is consistent with that trajectory building rather than achieved: the monthly series (2,516 in January, 2,700, 3,628, 3,480, 3,100, 4,268 in June, now 4,700) shows the R2 arriving as a steepening slope, with the heaviest lifting still scheduled for the fourth quarter.

One open question shadows the ramp’s next leg.

On the second-quarter call, founder and chief executive RJ Scaringe placed deliveries of the R2 Premium trim in early 2027 — three times — before the company stated the following day that the $53,990 configuration remains due in 2026.

Until that resolves, the R2 volumes in these estimates are the $57,990 Performance Launch Edition alone, with the cheaper Standard Long Range ($48,490) and Standard ($44,990) following in 2027 — a price ladder that will reshape the US monthly series as each rung arrives.

How the Rivals’ July Compares

The same Monday table shows Rivian’s US EV peers on diverging paths.

Lucid was estimated at 860 US sales, down 3.4% year over year and 5.7% from June — 240 Air sedans and 620 Gravity SUVs — a decline recorded despite the most aggressive incentive month in the brand’s US history, with zero-percent financing stretched to 72 months and a $10,000 credit on 2026 Gravity stock.

Tesla was estimated at 42,435 US sales, up 4.9% from June and 3.1% of the entire 1,380,088-unit US market.

Polestar was estimated at 326 US sales, down 8.2% from June, as the brand continues selling the remaining stock before it officially stops EV sales in the country.

The Series Behind the Number, and Its Caveats

Motor Intelligence‘s 2026 Rivian series has tracked the company’s official cadence plausibly, as its quarterly sums landing at 85.3% and 89.0% of the reported Q1 and Q2 totals, with the gap covering Canada and the excluded vans.

However, Motor Intelligence has adjusted historical figures for several brands in recent months.

Year-to-date, the estimates put Rivian’s US retail sales at 24,392.

The next fixed points are the 2027 R1 model-year reveal, the R2 Premium timing, and the August estimate, the first month at restored pricing with the R2 fully flowing.
