Nio Partners with China’s Payment Giant AliPay After Mastercard Alliance

Electric vehicle maker Nio and China’s widespread payment app Alipay are partnering to integrate digital payment systems into Nio’s vehicles. The partnership follows last week’s announcement of Nio’s collaboration with Mastercard to work on payment solutions, user services, and international business initiatives.

The signing ceremony took place earlier this week in Hangzhou. Alipay Vice President Wang Min, who oversees the Digital Mobility, Hospitality, and Tourism Business Unit, received Nio’s 10th Anniversary Edition ES8 SUV.

As it celebrates 10 years, Nio announced last month that customers who ordered the ES8 between November 25 and February 28 would receive the ’10th Anniversary Commemorative Package’.

Here’s the video of the recap of the signing ceremony shared on Chinese social media platforms.

As reported earlier on Tuesday, Nio’s weekly vehicle registrations in China declined during the first week of December. Registrations for the Nio brand fell 9.8% week-over-week to 3,700 units, while its Onvo sub-brand registered 1,400 vehicles, a 22% drop from the previous week. This brought the company’s total registrations to 5,100 vehicles.

The EV maker has recently been granted several design patents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for its EC6 and EC7 coupe SUVs and the five-seater SUV ES7. The company ‘hopes’ to be present in 25 markets by the end of next year, however, it is still unknown if the United States is being considered.
