Hyundai Recalls Nearly Every Inster Built Over Over Coolant Leak Fire Risk

Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) has published a recall affecting 14,610 Hyundai Inster EVs over a defective coolant valve that can cause a short circuit and, in the worst case, a vehicle fire.

The KBA published the filing on July 28. 

The safety campaign spans 40,045 vehicles worldwide — making it one of the largest recalls to date for a model that only began reaching European customers in late 2024.

The recall covers all Inster units produced between February 14, 2024, and April 14, 2026, at Gwangju Global Motors (GGM) in South Korea. The window covers effectively the model’s entire production run since launch.

The Inster campaign was one of two Hyundai issues filed with the KBA in the same week.

The other can be fixed via over the air software update covers 36,316 vehicles across ten model ranges — including the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Ioniq 9, Kona, Tucson and Santa Fe — built in the second half of 2025.

A software fault can cause the digital instrument cluster to restart and briefly go black while driving.

Hyundai has stated that no injuries or property damage linked to the defective valve have been reported in any market.

The remedy is a free-of-charge replacement of the faulty three-way valve with a redesigned component at any authorized Hyundai dealer.

Three Markets, 40,045 Vehicles

South Korea moved first, with regulators in Hyundai‘s home market initiating a domestic recall in May.

The recall notice covered 18,961 units of the Casper Electric — the Korean-market twin of the Inster, built on the same platform and sharing the same thermal management architecture.

Australia followed in June, covering 872 vehicles — model years 2024 through 2026 — shipped to the right-hand-drive market, where the car launched under the Inster name in 2025, according to Australia’s Vehicle Recalls authority.

Germany’s addition of 14,610 units is the largest single-country tranche outside South Korea.

Those three markets account for approximately 34,443 units combined.

However, the KBA filing’s global total of 40,045 implies an additional roughly 5,600 vehicles are subject to the recall in other markets not yet named in public filings — almost certainly additional European countries where the Inster is sold.

Given that the KBA’s production-period window runs through April 14, 2026, and shipping times from GGM’s South Korean plant to European dealerships can stretch several weeks, many of the German-market vehicles affected were registered only recently.

Hyundai will write to affected owners once the KBA releases registered-keeper data, and has asked owners to arrange a workshop appointment as soon as they receive that notification.

Fire Hazard

The defect sits inside the central three-way valve of the Inster’s thermal management system.

In normal operation, the valve governs coolant flow between the cabin heating-and-ventilation loop and the battery temperature-regulation circuit.

A shaft inside the valve physically repositions to redirect coolant depending on HVAC demand.

According to the KBA’s defect description, a manufacturing flaw means the shaft can fracture during routine use.

When it breaks, coolant escapes through the compromised valve body and can seep onto nearby high-voltage electrical components.

Contact between the leaked coolant and those components can produce a short circuit, creating a direct fire risk.

Australia’s recall authority, which captured the same defect in a June filing, additionally flagged a power-loss pathway.

The fractured shaft causes the valve connector to overheat, cutting motive power while the vehicle is in motion.

Australia’s official notice described the hazard as a sudden loss of drive power that could increase the risk of an accident causing injury or death to occupants or other road users.

The two failure modes — fire and power loss — are not mutually exclusive; both stem from the same root-cause manufacturing defect assessed through different regulatory lenses.

Critically, the defect is a hardware fault. No over-the-air software update can address a physically compromised valve.

Every affected vehicle requires a dealer visit and physical replacement of the component.

What Owners Should Do

According to Hyundai, the repair is free of charge.

In each affected market, Hyundai will contact owners directly using registration data obtained from the relevant transport authority and ask them to schedule a service appointment.

Owners in Germany should reference manufacturer recall code 61D127 when calling their authorized dealer.

South Korean owners of the Casper Electric should expect written notification directly from Hyundai.

Owners of a Hyundai Inster anywhere in Europe should check their Vehicle Identification Number against Hyundai‘s recall lookup tool regardless of whether their country has been specifically named.

The KBA lists the recall’s status as under investigation, meaning the authority is actively monitoring Hyundai‘s execution of the campaign.

Owners in any market unsure whether their specific vehicle is affected can check their VIN against Hyundai‘s official recall lookup tools or contact their national regulatory authority.

Hyundai is urging all affected owners to book service appointments as soon as possible rather than waiting for the formal notification letter.

The company has emphasized that no injuries or property damage have been linked to the defect in any market to date.

Sensitive Moment for the Inster

The safety campaign arrives at an awkward juncture for a model that had built significant commercial and critical momentum since its European launch.

The Inster debuted in Germany in December 2024 and by mid-2025 had become the country’s best-selling electric vehicle in the small-car segment, recording approximately 6,300 registrations in the first half of 2025, according to German registration data.

In South Korea, the Casper Electric — the Inster’s domestic counterpart — went on sale in mid-2024 and quickly became Hyundai‘s top-selling EV in the home market, driven by a sub-30 million won ($21,000) starting price and a WLTP range of up to 370 km in long-range trim.

By early 2025, monthly sales of the electric variant had overtaken the gasoline-powered Casper.

Hyundai formally introduced the 2027 model-year Casper Electric in South Korea earlier this month — a refresh that adds the Lounge trim and makes several convenience features standard across lower trims.

Separately, an Inster Lounge variant for Europe entered production in June, with a redesigned front end and exclusive 17-inch alloy wheels.

Germany currently prices the Inster from €23,900 ($27,500) for the base Select trim with the 42 kWh battery.

The larger 49 kWh variant, offering up to 370 km of WLTP range, starts from €25,490 ($29,400).
